Hockey WA are excited to announce the winners of the Hockey for Health Competition in partnership with Healthway and True Sport. The Hockey for Health Competition provides the opportunity for regional hockey associations and clubs to assess how well they are performing on and off the field.

The Hockey for Health Competition winners for 2019 were Lower Great Southern Hockey Association, Upper Great Southern Hockey Association and Busselton Hockey Association. Each of these Associations have promoted key healthy eating and wellbeing messages throughout their association and clubs through education, awareness, events, activations and carnivals. These hockey associations embrace the eight True Sport values to create a positive hockey community for their region.

Dinah Gordon, Hockey Development Officer with Lower Great Southern Hockey Association, is proud to have received the first prize in the Hockey For Health Competition on behalf of the Association.

“This is great recognition for all the hard work our Board and volunteers have undertaken throughout the last few years to become one of the best regional Associations in Western Australia”, she said.

“LGSHA are always aiming to improve the health and well-being of our members through delivering a fair, fun, inclusive and safe hockey competition which is underpinned by strong governance off the field”, added Dinah.

“Our volunteer base and work ethic has been outstanding and an example of where we are doing well, is the fact that we had 36 junior players ask to learn to umpire this year and give back to the sport, assisted by dedicated volunteer mentors to help them through this process”.

Dinah concluded that ” A new Strategic Plan for LGSHA has been delivered this year that will continue to guide the Association in the years to come and follow the Vision of Hockey For All”.

Clubs play a critical role in the health and wellbeing of our communities, but the health of the club itself is vital to ensure its future growth and sustainability. Healthway has championed the improvement of health for all Western Australians for almost thirty years and is proud that its health promotion programs and campaigns in the community are helping to build a healthier Western Australia.

Healthway CEO Susan Hunt said partnering with Hockey WA to support the Hockey for Health Club Program was a great way to reinforce the importance of making positive lifestyle choices.

“Hockey Clubs are in a unique position to promote healthy habits,” Ms Hunt said.

“By working together at the grass roots through local sporting clubs we can create a healthier more active Western Australia.”

Hockey WA CEO Stu Gilsenan said that working with Healthway to encourage clubs, players, volunteers and spectators to be healthy and give their best will build the capacity of hockey communities.

“Hockey WA are delighted to partner with Healthway to deliver this incentive which rewards our clubs for having the right health policies and organisational values in place” Mr Gilsenan said.

“We support our clubs to build leadership and sportsmanship and create fun, healthy environments to play hockey”.

For 2019, the Hockey for Health Competition was open to regional clubs and associations only. For 2020, Hockey WA will introduce a metropolitan club competition.
