Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 9 Wrap

Amid celebrating the contributions of First Nations people to the sport of hockey and beyond, round nine of the Stiles Electrical Premier League brought plenty of exciting action.
Men’s
A late goal via James Day has seen Melville hold off UWA in an epic Indigenous Round contest to record their seventh win of the season.
The visiting side did not take long to establish dominance, with James Day capitalising off a penalty corner to put Melville in front in the third minute.
Although UWA tried to find a way to respond, Melville held on to lead by quarter time.
As both sides put the pressure on one another, both UWA and Melville tried to score off penalty corners.
Despite a few opportunities going astray, UWA brought the scores level with a penalty corner via Chris Ciriello in the 27th minute.
The contest reached a stalemate during the third period, with neither side managing to break through each other’s defences.
As the match-up picked up intensity during the final quarter, James Day broke the deadlock with a 55th minute field goal to put Melville back in front.
Despite UWA’s efforts to catch up, Melville held on to win 2-1.
Elsewhere, WASPS defeated YMCC 2-0, Whitford defeated North Coast Raiders 4-1, Reds and Westside Wolves drew at two goals apiece, Victoria Park and Hale drew at 3-3, and Fremantle Cockburn edged out Mods-OGM 2-1.
Women’s
UWA have secured their seventh win of the season with a dominant 4-0 effort against Melville on home turf during Indigenous Round.
From the outset, UWA were looking to make a fast start and capitalise off penalty corners.
As Melville tried to put the pressure on, UWA’s Bellé Ramshaw broke through during the 12th minute to put the home side in front.
Melville continued to put up a solid front in a bid to respond but UWA continued to be one step ahead with Matilda Nelson scoring field goals in the 20th and 36th minute to extend UWA’s lead.
The final quarter saw UWA extend their lead even further with Shelly Liddlelow scoring a field goal in the 50th minute.
Despite Melville’s best efforts, UWA proved too strong, going on to win 4-0.
Elsewhere, Suburban Lions defeated WASPS 4-1, two late goals helped North Coast Raiders defeat Whitford 2-0, Hale held off Victoria Park 5-2, and the contest between Reds and Westside Wolves ended in a 1-1 draw.
Division 2
In the Men’s competition, YMCC defeated WASPS 4-2, two Sam Bodenstaff goals in as many minutes helped Whitford defeat Curtin University 3-1, UWA held off Melville 2-1, Westside Wolves edged out Reds 2-1, Victoria Park and Hale drew at a goal apiece, and Fremantle Cockburn held off Mods-OGM 3-2.
In the Women’s competition, Melville held off UWA 2-1, five goals from Bente Baekers helped YMCC on their way to record a dominant 7-0 victory over Suburban Lions, North Coast Raiders edged out Curtin University 3-2, Victoria Park and Hale drew at 1-1, and Westside Wolves defeated Reds 4-0.
