Prominent West Australian businessman, Michael Henderson FAIM FCDU, has been elected as President of Hockey WA, with experienced sports administrator and Board representative Narelle Finch elected as Vice President.
At a recent meeting of the Hockey WA Board, Michael Henderson has succeeded outgoing President Garry Fitzpatrick and Narelle Finch has been elected as Vice President replacing Peter Westlund. Both Mr Fitzpatrick and Mr Westlund will remain as Board members.
Mr Henderson was elected to the Board at the recent AGM held in March 2020 and brings a wealth of leadership experience working in both executive and non-executive roles across many businesses and NFP organisations, including past Chair of the States Technology Industry Advisory Council (TIAC). Narelle Finch was elected to the Board in 2019.
“Garry Fitzpatrick and Peter Westlund have done an exceptional job as President and Vice President over recent years and together they have re-affirmed Hockey WA’s position as one of the leading sport associations in the state,” said Mr Henderson.
“Hockey WA is here to serve our member clubs, so member communication and engagement will be a key focus for us in 2020, as our clubs and regional associations are the lifeline of hockey and these members work tirelessly to make our sport so successful.
“Critical this year will also be our focus with government and key industry partners to retain the AIS High-Performance Programme in WA. With 60% of the world’s population to the north of our state, maintaining a similar time zone to Western Australia, our value in the retention of this performance program is recognised to not only benefit our local and national players, yet to influence significant outcomes across the region.”
Mr Fitzpatrick was a strong advocate of the appointments and congratulated both Mr Henderson and Ms Finch on their appointments, wishing them well in their respective roles.
“We’re incredibly fortunate to have such a wealth of knowledge and experience on the Hockey WA Board. Whilst my work commitments have unfortunately meant a redistribution of my time, I am extremely pleased to be handing over the leadership to two very passionate and highly capable individuals, as hockey in WA continues to drive key strategic outcomes including the retention of the national High Performance Program and providing advocacy to our many thousands of passionate players, coaches, officials and volunteers. It has been an honour to help shape the role hockey plays in our community and to embrace the values, purpose and promise of Hockey WA,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.
Hockey is the first major community sport to recommence its winter season since COVID-19 and competition for all of Hockey WA’s juniors, seniors and masters grades commenced on Friday 26 June, 2020.
