2024 National Women's Development squad revealed
Published Wed 13 Dec 2023
Four WA-born rising hockey stars have been named as part of the 20-player National Women's Development squad brimming with talent for 2024.
Sarah Byrnes, Neasa Flynn, Pippa Morgan and Shanea Tonkin have been selected into Hockey Australia's development squad for 2024, after strong seasons for the Perth Thundersticks during the 2023 JDH Hockey One season that saw them earn bronze for the second year in a row.
Outside of Hockey One, Flynn & Morgan both featured for grand finalists UWA during the 2023 Premier League season, Sarah Byrnes played for Hale, and Shanea Tonkin featured for North Coast Raiders.
Tasmania's Evie Dalton, who joins the Development Squad for the first time, ran out for Curtin University throughout the Premier League season, whileQueensland's Madison Fitzpatrick featured for Reds.
In what will be a huge year for hockey, headlined by the Olympic Games in Paris, the Development squad will provide crucial depth to the Hockeyroos 2024 squad announced last week.
Alice Arnott and Maddison Brooks, who were named in the 2023 Development squad, earned a call up to the Hockeyroos this year, and have both since been named in the national squad for 2024. Ten other players named in the 2023 Development squad have been retained for next year.
The National Development Squad (NDS) athletes train at their home National Training Centre (NTC) under guidance of their NAPP coaches. Athletes in this squad may be invited to Perth to train with the Hockeyroos as part of Visiting Athlete Agreements (VAA).
