Melville's winning streak back in All Flags Premier League
Published Sat 19 Jun 2021
Melville had a familiar feeling today when James Day, current leading goal-scorer for the All Flags Premier League, was able to score two goals in his team's 3-2 victory over WASPs.
Day was able to find the net again this week after a two-match scoring hiatus, lifting his total for the season to 25 goals, all from penalty corners.
Recent Perth Thundersticks squad addition Matt Willis was also able to score for the winning side, maintaining his spot in the top-10 goal-scorers on a total of nine goals.
Melville's women's side put on a strong performance against WASPs as well, leading the scoreline for over two-thirds of the total match time.
While Kathryn Slattery's lone goal effort kept WASPs closely contending the match from the thirteen minute mark onward, Melville proved too good for the visitors.
On Friday evening, YMCC men were able to put on a clinic when they played Curtin, able to score nine goals to one and ensuring the home side still remained winless 11 rounds in.
Goals were scored for YMCC through Marshall Roberts at the second, 11th and 50th minute marks, supported by two goals from Michael Nicoli and singles from Luke Anderson, Max Freedman, Christopher Lim and Jesse Regan.
The women's match was a completely different tale, with two goals apiece from Chelsea Turner and Penny Squibb locking in a 4-1 win over YMCC, who are also yet to grab a win in the women's All Flags Premier League this season.
Three goals from Harriet Collins led Victoria Park to a 5-1 drubbing over Lions, with Jane Claxton and Katy Clarke also able to score for the Panthers.
The Victoria Park men's side took to Lakelands Hockey and Sporting Facility to get a win over Fremantle Cockburn, and were able to come out victorious 4-1, Brodie Sarre able to score two, Shane Benfell and Jason Gabriel netting singles.
Westside Wolves was able to net five in their match against Whitford, Simon Benetti, Dane Gavranich, Oscar Charlesworth and Tom Harvie's names on the scoresheet for Wolves, while Whitford were unable to find a conversion.
A battle between two top-five sides saw an exciting 4-4 draw played out between University of WA and Reds on Sunday.
Reds was first to find the backboard early when young gun Chaz Davies scored in the third minute of play, leading until UWA’s Jacob Evans equalised just before half time.
Two quick goals from Reds in the 32nd and 34th minutes after the main break led to the visiting side leading 3-1, before UWA responded with a goal of its own one minute later.
Daniel Timms was able to then net two in the 45th and 58th minutes to bring UWA to a 4-3 lead, before Daniel Robertson scored in the final minute of the match to give Reds a 4-4 draw.
UWA women’s side played a closely-fought match against North Coast Raiders and after a scoreless first half, a goal in the third quarter from UWA’s Maddie Desilva locked in a 1-0 win for her side.
The highlight match for the weekend of women’s All Flags Premier League action was a 4-3 spectacle between Hale and Wolves.
Meg Pearce, Jemma Buckley and Elly Buckley scored for Wolves in the match, while Hale’s Georgina Morgan was able to score a double and stars Emily Chalker and Fiona Cock able to score individual goals.
In the men’s All Flags Premier League, Hale were able to dish out a 5-1 thumping over Old Guildfordians through five individual goal scorers.
Geoff Cock, Charlie Norman, Alec Rasmussen, Josh Bowen and Brayden King were the goal scorers for the winning side, a late goal from Old Guildfordians’ Jack Loneragan the only one to convert for his side.
