Boyne’s milestone sees record games in sight

Published Tue 30 Mar 2021

YMCC stalwart Mark Boyne will reach the 350 game milestone this week, in the upcoming All Flags Premier League fixture against Old Guildford Mundaring Hockey Club.

The milestone is significant in the club’s history, as it encroaches the 359 games record held by YMCC legend Briand Robinson.

Boyne says that he’s sure he will reflect back fondly on the record, but reaching the games record is something that he was not aware of until recently.

“The 350 number makes me feel like a bit of a fossil to be honest; I don’t feel like I’ve played that many games which is probably a good thing, as it’s a bit of a reflection on how much I’ve enjoyed my time at the club,” Boyne says.

“I wasn’t actually aware of the record number of games at the club until a few weeks ago; initially I think reaching the 359 game milestone might not sit comfortably with me as Brian Robinson had a big impact on the club, so it will be incredibly special to equal that record.”

Boyne has been fortunate enough to experience a wealth of success during his hockey career, winning four premierships at YMCC and two with the then WA Thundersticks.

“I’ve been lucky to be a part of four premiership-winning teams during my time; sharing a period of sustained success is really challenging and rewarding, but the unexpected premierships in 2009 against Wolves and over Queensland in the AHL have to be the highlights,” Boyne says.

Boyne’s excited by the prospects of the season for his side, stating that there’s a great mix of youth and experience that could potentially lead the side towards glory.

“We’ve had a really strong and enjoyable pre-season and I’m sure we’ll see the hard work rewarded,” Boyne says.

“Our young crop of players in their first or second seasons is really exciting, but I’m most looking forward to seeing some of our more established players like Marshall Roberts, Marshall Puzey and Jesse Regan take their games to another level.”

“Having said that, nothing excites me more than a Graeme Begbie tomahawk goal and I feel like another one is just around the corner!”

YMCC has played a huge part in Boyne’s life, with the legend stating that he’s been fortunate to be around some fantastic hockey people.

“YM has played a big part in mine and my family’s lives; I’ve been lucky to play with some of my best mates and be around some real characters for a long period of time and it’s always been a lot of fun and easy to come back to year after year,” Boyne says.

YMCC faithful, make sure to head to Guildford Grammar School from 7:00pm tonight, Tuesday 30 March to celebrate Boyne’s milestone achievement.
