Bunbury claims back-to-back CBH Group Men’s Country Championships division one titles

Published Mon 26 Jun 2023

Bunbury have been crowned champions of men’s hockey in regional Western Australia after a 1-0 Grand Final win over Upper Great Southern to take home the 2023 CBH Group Men’s Country Championships division one title.

Bunbury and Upper Great Southern were the regions that dominated in this year’s competition, with both featuring at the pointy end in division one and two, as well as an appearance and win in the Masters division one Grand Final for Upper Great Southern.

The division one title win for Bunbury, a back-to-back gong after downing Lower Great Southern 2-0 in last year’s Grand Final, came with challenges from strong competition in a tightly contested division.

Bunbury claimed two wins and suffered a loss to Lower Great Southern in the pool matches, with the side having to face Lower Great Southern again in their first final.

Both sides had a strong showing in the match with the final score ending at 0-0, but Bunbury won 2-1 in shootouts to narrowly book their spot in the Grand Final and end up the eventual champions.

Upper Great Southern’s second side claimed the bragging rights in division two in another top-level clash against Bunbury’s second side, defeating them in a 2-1 win.

Upper Great Southern finished second in Pool B in a stacked division two comprising of eight sides in total, but a 2-0 win over Busselton in the finals was enough to land them into the Grand Final to take down Bunbury in a hot final contest.

Geraldton ran away with the division three Grand Final win in a 2-0 victory over Esperance.

Geraldton suffered just the one draw among their four wins to take home the crown in a strong showing.

Upper Great Southern and Eastern Districts won the Masters division one and two titles respectively.

Upper Great Southern’s second title of this year’s Championships came in a 3-0 win over Busselton in the Masters division one.

The side won all five of their matches with a goal difference of eighteen with no scores conceded.

Eastern Districts defeated Eastern Goldfields 4-2 in the Masters division two Grand Final.

The side only recorded the one win in their pool matches, but performed during the finals series, recording a 3-0 win over MIling in the finals and the eventual 4-2 Grand Final win to claim the bragging rights.
