CCA and Waves crowned boys and girls Hockey WA Gryphon Cup champions

A thrilling final day of action has seen the Waves girls and the Ciriello Coaching Academy boys sides crowned the 2022 Hockey WA Gryphon Cup champions in two red hot Grand Final contests.
The Waves were a dominant force in the girls competition with a goal difference of 14 and secured a 1-0 Grand Final victory over the Flames in a closely fought contest at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.
Laila Arnold was the difference for her side, scoring from a penalty corner – the eventual lone score of the match to seal the victory.
In the boys competition, the second-placed Ciriello Coaching Academy went head-to-head with the Malaysian Sports School in first.
The Malaysian Sports Schools side were the standouts of the competition, with an unbeaten streak of eight wins and a goal difference of 44, but eventually suffered heartbreak to the Ciriello Coaching Academy in shootouts.
Malaysian Sports Schools’ Aferull Syahrill opened the scoring early on in the piece in the sixth minute and head into the main break up 1-0.
Alex May of the Ciriello Coaching Academy pulled back the score to 1-1 in minutes after half-time to see the sides end the match in a 1-1 deadlock.
Goalkeeper William Watson proved to be the hero for the Ciriello Coaching Academy, pulling off two crucial saves that led his side to a thrilling victory.
