A thrilling feast of indoor hockey has concluded the final day’s play of the Hockey WA Indoor Classic, supported by the Shire of Northam, with the Suns and Outbacks crowned champions of the men’s and women’s competitions.
The two-day competition, featuring some of the best indoor players in Australia,
In the women’s competition, an intense effort from both the Breakers and Outbacks resulted in an even 3-3 finish to send the game to shootouts.
The Outbacks prevailed in the nail-biting finish, winning the shootouts 2-1, with Outbacks keeper Monique Formilan proving to be the hero with two stunning saves.
Star Outbacks representative Emma Reid was ecstatic to reap the rewards in a competition that gives indoor hockey the spotlight.
“The Ric Charlesworth Classic is fantastic for outdoor, but I am so stoked with indoor being given a chance in a similar format,” Reid said.
“It’s particularly pleasing to have that little bit of success heading into the national season, but more importantly, a competition like this is so valuable to us as players for preparation heading into our major indoor commitments.”
The Suns claimed the men’s title in a strong 3-1 victory over the Breakers, with two saves from Suns goalkeeper Hunter Banyard crucial in the final quarter of the match.
Suns skipper Joshua Byrne-Quinn was pleased to seal the victory in a contest of high intensity.
“It was an intense contest and I thought we might struggle to hold on towards the end there,” Byrne-Quinn said.
“I was worried when they were given the penalty stroke, but Hunter (Banyard) pulled off a fantastic save to keep us in the contest.
“All the boys played their roles really well, it was a quality effort.”
In the play-off matches between third and fourth in the men’s and women’s competitions respectively, the Suns claimed a 5-4 victory over the Highlanders, while in the men’s, it was the Highlanders who put in a dominant effort in a 6-2 victory over the Outbacks.
