Coach n Play workshop brings Olympic heroes to Narrogin

Published Fri 23 Jul 2021

Hockey WA headed to the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association in Narrogin to deliver the first iteration of the Coach n Play workshop, with former Olympic-heroes heading to the region to provide an invaluable experience to aspiring coaches and players.

The Coach n Play workshop entailed a detailed run through of Hockey WA's newest initative - the Coach n Play website - with hockey legend and FIH Master Coach Terry Walsh showcasing the platform to coaches in the region.

The Coach n Play website is a platform with video-based tools, acting as a pocket-coach for players and coaches across the state, with Olympic-standard skills and drills at their convenience.

15 coaches from as far away as Albany, Mount Barker, Esperance and the Avon attended the workshop, with Terry's insight proving to be a valuable asset for hockey in WA.

Hockey WA's performance coach, Des King and GM Talent Development, Dean Evans and WAIS Hall of Fame Chairman David Hatt also delivered the WA Game & Culture, Pathways and Government Relations presentations.

The Olympic Panel with Terry Walsh, Jamie Dwyer, Bevan George, Dean Evans and Damon Diletti was enjoyed by a big crowd in the Bevan George Pavilion, who were given an insight into the Olympic experience and entertained by a legendary panel. After the Olympic Panel, the crowd enjoyed watching our WA Country Men get some valuable game practice against Narrogin local legends!

An Under-13s State Team trial was held for the first time outside of Perth for girls and boys from the Great Southern and Wheatbelt regions, with quality coaches and selectors giving their time to the next generation of hockey stars from regional WA.

There was some unique and genuine talent on display and reaffirmed the Hockey WA commitment to identify, develop and support the talent around the state.

Thanks goes to Ian Healy, Hockey WA Performance and Development Coordinator and Rodney Johnson, Upper Great Southern Hockey Association Development Officer, who tirelessly worked to ensure that the event was a success!

Hockey WA also wish to thank the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association Committee, and in particular Steve Sexton and Mark Reagan for their assistance on the weekend.
