Compelling clashes highlight All Flags Premier League action
Published Sat 31 Jul 2021
Westside Wolves asserted its dominance on Saturday in the men's All Flags Premier League, with a huge 7-0 win over Curtin University at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.
Five individual goal scorers added to the tally for the side, Simon Benetti able to contribute a hat-trick, while singles came from Oscar Charlesworth, Alistair Murray, Tom Keating and Ed Welch.
Benetti has now scored 14 goals this season, now sitting fifth in the Eric Pearce Leading Goalscorer race behind James Day (Melville), Jason Gabriel (Victoria Park), Aaron Kleinschmidt (Reds) and Liam Flynn (Hale).
It wasn't the first big win at PHS for the weekend, with a Friday night showdown between Reds and WASPs resulting in a 5-1 win for the visiting side.
Reds' Aaron Kleinschmidt and Brodee Foster both netted a brace, alongside a single from Chaz Davies, with Paul Robertson WASPs' lone goal scorer.
Victoria Park's women's side was able to maintain a clean sheet in its match against North Coast Raiders, coming away with a 4-0 victory at Warwick Hockey Centre.
Maddie Fenwick, Tayah Medlen, Katy Clarke and Renee Rockliff found the back of the net once each for the Panthers side, which is still sitting atop the women's ladder.
The same score was played out when UWA's men's side defeat Hale by a four goal buffer at UWA Superturf on Saturday evening.
UWA's Harry Golding converted two field goals, supported by young gun Cam Geddes and skipper Daniel Timms.
A 2-1 victory over Hale saw UWA jump to second spot in the women's standings, with just four points separating the top four sides.
Two draws in the women's All Flags Premier League were played out between Curtin and Wolves (2-2), and WASPs and Lions (0-0).
Whitford Hockey Club continue their search for their first win of the season in the men’s competition, with Fremantle Cockburn narrowly defeating the side 2-1 at Warwick hockey Centre.
Fremantle Cockburn’s Declan Spencer and Matt Bird scored the first two of the match, with Whitford’s Nathan Ephraums scoring late in the match to give his side a burst of life, ultimately falling short of stealing a draw from the match.
Victoria Park continue their surge towards the top end of the table in the men’s competition, with a 6-0 drubbing over Old Guildfordians seeing the side sit comfortably at second on the table.
Vic Park showcased their attacking prowess, with six individual goal-scorers seeing the side secure a strong victory.
YMCC shocked the women’s competition and finally claimed their first win for the season with a scintillating 5-2 victory over Melville.
YMCC’s Hayley Padget starred with two goals in a stunning victory for the club.
Another shock performance in the men’s match saw YMCC draw with Melville 2-2.
The top of the table Melville side went down 2-1 in the 48th minute, but a goal to Ben Staines drew the side at a deadlock, with both sides unable to break clear until the final buzzer.
