Congratulations, Australian hockey heroes!

Published Fri 06 Aug 2021

Hockey WA would like to congratulate our Olympic heroes from the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos who put in strong performances in Tokyo at the 2020 Olympic Games.

The Hockeyroos completed their best-ever run in history in their first five pool games, with five wins from five matches, but ultimately fell just short in their Quarter Final against India.

The Kookaburras made it all the way to the gold-medal match against Belgium in an amazing tournament run, but an agonising defeat in penalties saw them narrowly miss out on gold to claim silver.

Hockey WA CEO Fabian Ross said although the sides suffered close defeats in the finals, their performances should be celebrated and commended.

“Congratulations to everyone involved – athletes, coaches, managers and staff – in the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras cohort for their amazing performances in Tokyo,” Ross says.

“I know that not only WA, but the whole country is proud of their performances in the green and gold – hockey in Australia has a bright future ahead and it’s exciting to see our teams perform so well on the world stage.

“A special congratulations goes to our WA athletes in Aran Zalewski, Karri Somerville, Trent Mitton, Georgia Wilson, Tom Wickham and Tyler Lovell on their selections and efforts in Tokyo, and Penny Squibb, who unfortunately couldn’t make it – we’re extremely proud of you all here at Hockey WA and across the state.”
