Curtin legend hits 350 not out

Published Wed 17 May 2023

Curtin University Hockey Club’s Rhys Angwin will hit the 350 Premier League Games milestone this weekend when his side runs out for their clash with WASPs at 3:30pm, Saturday 20 May at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

Hailing from the Narrogin area, Angwin has starred for the Pirates since relocating in 2005, with many stating the goal scorer as a legend and loyal servant of the club.

Congratulations Rhys – an amazing effort that should be celebrated by the wider hockey community.

Curtin University Hockey Club has provided an extensive background and message on Rhys’ phenomenal achievements across his career:

A talented junior, Angwin represented the state in all age groups; his parents, Tracey and Steve, driving Rhys several times a week up from the farm for all the training sessions and attending the tournaments.

From early on, Angwin made centre forward his own with his tenacious, never-say-die attitude and appetite for goals. In 2011 he was selected in the Thundersticks squad and represented Australia A. Rhys has scored 145 Premier League goals which places him fourth in the all-time Premier League goal scoring for Curtin University, behind Olympians Eric Pearce, Gordon Pearce and Ian Kirkaldy respectively.

Over a near two-decade career, Angwin has been fortunate to play alongside many great Australian players at the Pirates including two Kookaburra captains in Bevan George and Mark Knowles. He has also been coached by several renowned Coaches, but his most admired Coach was “Harpo” Neil Hawgood. One of his greatest memories will be taking the field with his three younger brothers - Kyle, Dane and Wade. It is often debated who the ‘best’ Angwin will be at the peak of their playing time. One thing for certain, Rhys has definitely outlasted all of them by reaching this major milestone today.

After a break from hockey between 2018 and 2021 while focusing on Muay Thai and football, Angwin returned to play in Curtin’s Division Two team, and then returned to Premier League last season. This coincided with a focus on coaching and player development of Curtin’s emerging players, being an assistant coach for both the State Under-18s and the Premier League men's side.

Rhys is married to Aleece who has been his major support over the years for their business, Angwin Plumbing and Renovations, and his hockey. He is a devoted father to his daughter, Harper, and son Jett, who are his biggest fans. His father Steven travels up from Narrogin almost every weekend to watch his son play whenever he can, unless of course it clashes with his own game for the Curtin Masters O60s. There is a healthy rivalry between the two, and Steve has been known on many occasions to outscore his son.

Angwin’s dedication, loyalty and big heart will never be questioned, and while his 350 games have been a tough journey at times, he has stayed loyal to the club he commenced his journey with back in 2005.  Having retired from hockey a few times over the last decade, it often looked as though the 350-game milestone was going to be a bridge too far, so it's with great pride that we celebrate our very own ‘John Farnham’ - Rhys Angwin.
