Fremantle Cockburn knock-off ladder-leaders in strong victory
Published Sun 08 Aug 2021
The All Flags Premier League has kicked off this weekend with a thrilling 2-2 draw between the women’s Melville and Suburban Lions sides.
Melville led the match 1-0 until the 49th minute when Lions’ Georgina Dowd levelled the scoring to bring the sides at a deadlock.
Melville looked to snatch the victory late in the match, with Naomi Evans finding the back of the net from a penalty corner in the 57th minutes, but the Lions responded quickly, scoring their own penalty corner goal a minute later through Hannah Smith.
Whitford came close to snatching points off of a dominant UWA side in the men’s competition, scoring the opening goal of the match through Sam Bodenstaff in the first quarter but UWA replied quickly with two of their own goals to secure the victory.
The women’s UWA side also came home with the three points in their match against YMCC, with Prada Herron leading the side to a 3-0 victory, scoring two goals to put the side in good stead until the final buzzer.
In a high-scoring match between the YMCC and Old Guildfordians men’s sides, YMCC handed a 9-3 drubbing to OGMHC, with YM’s Jacob Anderson putting on a dominant performance, scoring four goals in a day out for the side.
Hale continues to hang onto a top four spot in the women’s competition, narrowly defeating North Coast Raiders 2-1 in a closely fought contest at Hale Turf.
Fremantle Cockburn have claimed a shock win over Melville in the men’s competition, defeating the side 2-1 at their home ground in Pulse Stadium.
With Melville not at their dominant best in recent weeks, Fremantle Cockburn applied the pressure early in the match, scoring two unanswered goals to down the ladder-leaders in an amazing performance for the side.
Reds continue their hunt for the top position on the ladder, defeating Hale 3-1 at their home ground in a strong outing for the side.
Aaron Kleinschmidt was the answer going forward for the side once again, scoring two goals in the second half to lead the side to victory.
Sunday’s action kicked off with a double-header between the Westside Wolves and Victoria Park men’s and women’s sides at Lemnos Field.
Wolves claimed a strong 2-1 victory in the women’s match, solidifying their spot in the top four and continuing their hot form from recent weeks.
Madi Ratcliffe dragged her Wolves side across the line late in the match, scoring two goals in the 50th and 52nd minutes to turn a 1-0 deficit into a win for the side.
The Wolves men’s side also pulled off a strong win over Victoria Park who sit one position ahead on the standings.
Oscar Charlesworth and Simon Benetti both scored two goals to lead the side to a 4-0 win over a strong Victoria Park side.
Another double-header at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University saw the men’s and women’s Curtin and WASPs sides go head-to-head.
Curtin’s Chantelle Ciallella led the side to a 3-1 victory, scoring two of her own to defeat WASPs who sit one position ahead of the side on the standings.
It was a different story in the men’s match, with WASPs defeating Curtin 4-1, with four individual goal scorers sharing the load.
