Game Changers: Perth Pythons Hockey Club
Published Sat 19 Apr 2025
Game Changers is a series celebrating people in the hockey community who are doing more than just playing the game — they are changing it.
In this edition, we meet the Perth Pythons: an LGBTQIA+ inclusive hockey club breaking down barriers and building something bigger than sport.
Led by president Callan Kneale, the Perth Pythons Hockey Club is a social, inclusive space for players of all backgrounds and skill levels.
“We’re mainly a social club so we play in summer mostly,” he said.
“We have a big focus on beginners, and we have trainings on Sundays so anyone that wants to come along and train is free to come down, have a hit.
Along with the casual Sunday trainings, Perth Pythons also take part in seven-a-side games with UWA Hockey Club and 11-a-side matches.
But beyond the field, the club is a hub for connection, laughter and support, regularly teaming up with Team Perth, the city’s LGBTQIA+ sporting alliance, and taking an active role in Pride WA festivities each November.
For many in the queer community, sport hasn’t always felt like a welcoming space.
In fact, statistics show that around 75% of LGBTQIA+ individuals leave sport after the age of 18, often after coming out – and many don’t return.
That’s where clubs like Perth Pythons come in.
“We’re challenging that trend,” he said.
“This is a space for anyone who’s ever put the stick down and thought they couldn’t come back – we’re here to say yes, you can.”
And you don’t need to be an elite athlete – the club welcomes everyone from complete beginners to seasoned players who’ve competed at a state level, resulting in a diverse mix of skills, experiences and stories that create a uniquely supportive and fun environment.
For Callan, the best part of the Pythons is the people.
“The diversity of the group is incredible – everyone comes from different walks of life, but we’re all passionate about hockey and about creating a safe, fun space,” he said.
The Pythons don’t just stick to city fields either – they’ve played in country leagues in Busselton, Albany and Goomalling, and hosted the Pride Cup in November – giving players even more opportunities to connect and compete.
During the winter season, many Pythons players join mainstream teams, continuing the cycle of connection and helping new members reintegrate into the wider hockey community.
“Team sport is pivotal,” Callan emphasizes.
“I think if you need an outlet or need that space where you have got a group of friends and you've got that weekly check-in where you've got that training session or game, nothing beats team sport.
“Whether it's a win or a loss it does not really matter because at the end of the day, hockey wins.
“Get out there and give it a go - it doesn't matter how good you are at the sport; it's about having fun.”
