Geraldton crowned champions of regional WA in thrilling competition finale

Published Mon 19 Jun 2023

Geraldton Hockey Association were crowned the top region of WA hockey after defeating Upper Great Southern to claim the 2023 CBH Group Women’s Country Championships Division One title in a thrilling Grand Final clash.

With the sides at a 0-0 deadlock heading into the final moments of the match, Geraldton earned a long corner with 30 seconds to go that was rocketed into the circle and finished off in a score to snatch the victory off Upper Great Southern just moments before the final buzzer.

The title win for Geraldton did not come without its challenges, with the side from the Mid West narrowly defeating Lower Great Southern 4-3 in shootouts after a full-time score of 1-1 in the Semi-Final.

Bunbury, last year’s Division One title winners, finished the pool matches at the top of the Division One placings.

In a Cinderella story for Upper Great Southern - who finished 4th in the pool matches - the side defeated last year’s champions 1-0, resulting in a missed opportunity for Bunbury to repeat last year's efforts.

Eastern Districts Hockey Association claimed the Division Two title after a nail-biting clash with the Pilbara Krocs.

Pilbara went up 1-0 with 15 minutes to go, but Eastern Districts scored shortly after with the match ending in a 1-1 draw. Eastern Districts claimed the win 3-1 in shootouts.

Lower Great Southern’s second team ran away with the Division Three title in a 3-0 win over Peel in the Grand Final, with the side claiming four wins and one draw in their dominant run.

Division Four’s bragging rights went to Busselton who narrowly defeated Central Midlands 2-1 in their Grand Final, with their only draw of the competition at the hands of Central Midlands in their pool clash.

A tightly contested Division Five with five teams fighting for the top gong went the way of Donnybrook who defeated Warren 2-0 in the Grand Final.

Upper Great Southern’s lone title claim came in the form of the Masters Division One side who defeated Bunbury 1-0 in a close Grand Final result, while the Masters Division Two saw Esperance snatch the win 4-1 in shootouts after finishing their Grand Final at 1-1 against Roe Districts.
