Giant killer UWA side knocks off ladder-leaders in Melville

Published Mon 05 Jul 2021

Another outstanding performance from the Buckley sisters sealed the deal for Westside Wolves in a 5-2 win over YMCC in the women's All Flags Premier League.

Wolves were quick to open the scoring, 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Madi Ratcliffe able to find the net just eight minutes in to the match, however YMCC's Portia Miller was quick to equalise a minute later.

Ratcliffe then went on to score one more, with Jemma (2 goals) and Elly (1 goal) Buckley both adding to the scoresheet for Wolves.

YMCC is now facing an uphill battle to avoid relegation at the end of the season, still yet to win a match after 11 rounds.

Victoria Park was able to put on a stellar performance against WASPs, snatching a 4-0 win to maintain its spot atop the ladder above Hale.

Rachel Frusher (2 goals), Katy Clarke (1 goal) and Renee Rockliff (1goal) were among the sides best, all able to convert opportunities for the Panthers.

In the men's action, a dominant Wolves side was able to get the upper hand over YMCC, scoring three goals to the home side's zero in a Saturday twilight spectacular.

The final match of the day between WASPs and Victoria Park men resulted in a stalemate, the scoreline being two goals apiece at the final siren.

With heavy and torrential rain falling on Sunday, multiple games were postponed, with an aim to complete these at a later date.

Old Guildfordians Mundaring’s match-up against Whitford at Guidlford turf and Curtin against Hale at Perth Hockey Stadium in the men’s competition were deemed unplayable, with the women’s contest between North Coast Raiders and Suburban Lions also postponed.

The rain eased and the Curtin and Hale women’s sides hit the field to complete their contest, with Hale earning a 3-2 victory in wet conditions.

Curtin gained a 2-1 lead early in the second half through a goal from Chantelle Ciallella, but Hale proved too strong for the side, with goals to Ciara Faichney and Kayla Pollard in the 47th and 58th minutes respectively snatching the win from Curtin in the dying minutes.

Reds claimed a victory over Fremantle Cockburn in a high-scoring affair, with Reds sealing the victory through a strong 6-3 performance.

Aaron Kleinschmidt starred for Reds, scoring a hat-trick in tough conditions at Aquinas Turf.

The round finished off with a double-header at pulse Stadium in Melville, with both the men’s and women’s Melville and UWA sides facing-off in thrilling contests.

UWA defeated Melville in the women’s match 2-1, with Melville opening the scoring early in the second half and UWA pulling back two goals to snatch the victory from the side.

In the men’s match, UWA knocked off the ladder leaders in Melville in a stunning contest - the sides went back-and-forth with UWA taking a 3-1 lead in the 41st minute through a goal to Daniel Timms.

Melville’s Ben Staines pulled back the score line to 3-2 to UWA in the 52nd minute, but ultimately the side fell short and were unable to pull back far enough.
