Goals galore in scintillating All Flags Premier League fixtures

Published Sun 23 May 2021

This week’s round of All Flags Premier League action kicked off with a bang at Perth Hockey Stadium on Friday night, with a double-header between the Victoria Park and Wolves men’s and women’s sides.

A mid-table clash between the men’s saw Victoria Park dominate in a strong attacking performance by the side, defeating Wolves 4-1 in a heated clash, to push the side ahead on the standings with the Panthers now sitting in fourth place and charging towards the top end of the table.

The roles were reversed in the women’s clash, with Westside Wolves claiming the win, defeating the reigning premiers in Victoria Park in one of their strongest outings yet for the season.

The 5-1 win came off the back of strong attacking play with the Vic Park defence pressed for most of the match; Elly Buckley starred with two goals in the 30th and 36th minutes to sink the hearts of the Panthers faithful.

Melville City claimed their first win of the season in the women’s competition, defeating the Suburban Lions 2-0 in a tightly contested match.

Going into the final quarter, the two sides were stuck in a nil-to-nil deadlock, with Melville the side to break-away with two goals in quick succession from Courtney Smedley and Kim Hocking in the 48th and 49th minutes respectively.

Melville’s success continued for the day in the men’s competition, with the undefeated men’s side claiming another huge win for the season, defeating OGMHC 7-0.

Leading goal-scorer James Day continues to be unstoppable for sides in penalty corners, scoring another three on the day with ease, taking his goals tally for the season to a monumental 22 goals in eight games, with Liam Flynn of Hale the next best on nine.

Coming off a 5-3 loss to the in-form side of the competition in Melville, Reds looked to regain some form heading in to their match-up against Hale in the men’s competition.

Hale claimed a 2-0 lead early in final term, with goals to Matthew Lewis and Liam Flynn in the 14th and 46th minutes looking to put the side in the box seat for a victory over the reigning premiers.

In a final quarter thriller, Reds charged towards victory, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2, with goals to Daniel Robertson, Aaron Kleinschmidt and Chaz Davies sinking Hale in the match of the round thus far.

YMCC claimed a shock win over a powerful UWA side in the men’s competition, defeating the side 1-0 through a great goal from Michael Nicoli in the 30th minute; the win sees YMCC climb up to sixth on the table, making a push towards the top end.

YMCC looked to fight for their first win of the season over a strong UWA side in the women’s competition.

Unfortunately, with Perth’s wet and wild conditions on the day, the game was suspended due to ground flooding; updates will be communicated in due course.

Georgina Morgan was unstoppable for yet another week in the women’s All Flags Premier League, able to convert two penalty corners in Hale’s exciting 2-0 win over North Coast Raiders on Sunday.

Scoring goals in the wet can often prove difficult, however the rain did not stop WASPs men’s side from scoring seven goals against bottom-placed Curtin.

Six individuals found the back of the net for WASPs, with Lewis Barritt able to convert two field goals in the valiant 7-0 win.

The goal scorer list for WASPs also included Joe Robinson, Lachlan Sampson, Bryn de Bes, Kyle Potter and Paul Robertson.

The women’s WASPs side also got the better of Curtin in a 1-0 victory, Keely Hebbiton the lone goal scorer.

Fremantle Cockburn hosted Whitford at home, Dylan Spencer, the captain of the home side, able to score twice in the final eleven minutes of the match, leading his side to a thrilling 3-0 win.
