H1 MATCH REPORT: Perth Thundersticks vs Canberra Chill

Published Sun 13 Oct 2024

A dominant performance has produced a record seven-goal win for our Perth Thundersticks Women, while a solid comeback effort wasn’t to be for our Men’s side.

Men

A stellar comeback effort was not enough to rain over Canberra Chill’s fast start, with the Perth Thundersticks falling short of a win by just one goal.

The Perth Thundersticks took on the Canberra Chill at the National Hockey Centre to close out the opening round of Liberty Hockey One on Sunday 13 October.

Despite a hot start and quick goal attempts by the likes of Brodee Foster and Tom Wickham, the Thundersticks found themselves overwhelmed in defence as the Chill charged through for early goals.

The Chill were off and firing with Aiden Dooley scoring a field goal to open the scoring, although Ben Rennie prevented the subsequent conversion.

Although the Thundersticks tried to make a response, the defenders found themselves slammed by the Chill, conceding penalty corners and strokes.

The Chill would capitalise on those errors to build a substantial lead with Dooley scoring off two penalty strokes to earn an early hat-trick and a further penalty corner goal via James Jewell to lead 4-0 at the first break.

The second quarter saw the Thundersticks try to salvage their game amid an overwhelming press by the Chill.

Despite an early penalty corner shot being deflected, along with several turnovers, the Thundersticks managed to stifle the Chill’s scoring opportunities to keep the margin at four goals by half time.

Following the main break, the Thundersticks looked to stage a comeback charging through in a bid to make up the four goal deficit.

After winning a penalty corner opportunity, Tom Harvie would be the one to break the drought and score the Thundersticks’ first goal of the season.

The goal provided a much-needed confidence boost as the Thundersticks continued their hard press and scoring another penalty corner goaol via Brodee Foster just minutes later.

What followed was a stalemate between the Thundersticks and the Chill as both sides mounted the pressure on each other.

By three-quarter time, the Thundersticks trailled by two goals.

The Thundersticks continued their comeback efforts during the final quarter, chipping away at Canberra’s defence to earn six penalty corner opportunities in quick succession.

However, it took a penalty stroke via co-captain Tom Wickham to shave the margin down to one goal.

Despite the Thundersticks putting in a determined effort, they ultimately fell just short 3-4.

Women

The Perth Thundersticks have recorded their biggest win in Hockey One history, defeating the Canberra Chill by seven goals.

The Perth Thundersticks took on the Canberra Chill at the National Hockey Centre to close out the opening round of Liberty Hockey One on Sunday 13 October.

Although the Chill were off and firing looking to earn an early goal off a penalty corner opportunity, the Thundersticks were first to score with Lexie Pickering scoring a field goal and managing a conversion to give her team a quick 2-0 lead.

As the Chill stepped up the pressure, the contest went into a deadlock with neither side breaking through to score for the remainder of the opening term.

The Thundersticks continued to run away with the contest during the second quarter with Jesse Reid breaking through the Chill’s defences to score a field goal of her own, along with the subsequent conversion.

Just minutes later, Karri Somerville would join in on the fun, scoring off a penalty corner to bring the lead to five goals.

As the Chill looked to respond, the Thundersticks held strong in defence to prevent the scoring opportunities and maintain a 5-0 lead at half time.

Following the main break, the Thundersticks and the Chill continued to mount the pressure on one another.

After what seemed to be a bit of a stalemate between the two sides, Pickering charged through to score a second field goal and make another successful conversion to extend the Thundersticks’ lead even further.

Seconds later, vice-captain Liné Malan was in the right place at the right time to score a field goal of her own to bring the margin to eight goals.

With the Thundersticks well in control of the match, the Chill managed a late reprieve with Georgina West scoring a field goal and a conversion to bring the score to 2-8 at the final change.

The final quarter saw the Thundersticks continue to dominate on the turf, stifling the Chill as much as possible.

The match seemed to be signed, sealed and delivered as Malan made an impressive baseball swing to score a second field goal and successfully converted to crack the double digits.

Although the Chill managed another goal via Naomi Evans, it was not enough to weather the storm of the Thundersticks, who held strong to win 10-3, with Lexie Pickering named Player of the Match for her impressive performance up forward.
