High-level hockey to land in Geraldton for Mid West Festival of Hockey

The Hockey WA Mid West Festival of Hockey will hit Geraldton from Thursday 19 May to Sunday 22 May, with a bumper four days of hockey action on offer for the hockey faithful in the region.

Thanks to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural industries' Country Sport Enrichment Scheme, hockey members in Geraldton and the surrounding areas will be treated to several different high-level hockey activations.

This year, the Mid West Festival of Hockey will be headlined by key Premier League fixtures between the men’s and women’s Reds Hockey Club and Hale Hockey Club sides on Saturday 21 May, with fixtures to be broadcast from the Geraldton Hockey Association live and free.

The Premier League fixtures will take place alongside the official Geraldton Hockey Association turf opening.

In a significant occasion for hockey in the Mid West, two new high-level turfs have been recently installed at the Geraldton Hockey Association, providing a world-class experience for hockey players in the region.

A number of clinics are on offer for budding young hockey stars before Saturday’s Premier League fixtures, with an under-12s and under-15s clinic open to junior hockey players free of charge at Geraldton’s new world-class precinct.

The clinics will see Premier League players nurture the next generation of hockey talent from Geraldton and the surrounding areas, with an engaging program ensuring maximum opportunity for players to take their hockey to the next level.

Coaches and umpires won’t miss out on the action, with a Level 1 Coach Course and Level 1 Umpire Course on offer, providing further development for hockey in the region across all facets of hockey.

Other experiences for the round include an indigenous cultural experience and primary school carnivals on Thursday, as well as a panel featuring stars from the Hale Hockey Club on Saturday night.

Hockey WA General Manager of Game & Community Development, Shayley McGurk Davy, says she is excited to take the round to Geraldton in 2022.

“It is exciting to be able to deliver this year’s Mid West Festival of Hockey in Geraldton, particularly with two recently-installed surfaces as an added boost to deliver a high-quality event,” McGurk Davy says.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to officially open the new precinct and we’re sure hockey members in the Mid West will relish the opportunity to experience high-level hockey across a number of activations.
