Historic match-ups headline fierce fixtures

Published Thu 22 Apr 2021

Sensational, memorable and historic hockey will be played this weekend, as the All Flags Premier league continues into the women’s round two and the men’s round five.

Two must-see ANZAC Day events will be played on Sunday April 25, with the Vic Park men and women taking on WASPs, and Fremantle Cockburn due to host Reds.

WASPs women’s side had a huge comeback win last weekend, scoring three goals in the final nine minutes of the match to win 4-1 against YMCC.

In the men, fourth-placed Vic Park and sixth-placed WASPs will compete, with an ANZAC Day ceremony taking place on the turf before the match, and an awards ceremony afterward.

Fremantle will line up in its brand-new Indigenous shirt, when Reds head to Lakelands Hockey and Sporting Facility for the first time in an ANZAC match.

Unfortunately, Reds will be without its two-time premiership coach, Olympians medallist Ian Smyth after he sustained a face injury in their match against Old Guildfordians last week.

The weekend of hockey will commence Friday evening with the men’s Wolves side lining up against YMCC, in a Lemnos field derby.

Saturday will see UWA men will take on Melville at home, in another headline match for the weekend, Melville looking to retain its spot on top of the ladder, while a third placed UWA looks to climb its way up.

Following this, the women’s match between the two sides will see UWA eager to repeat its success of last week when it beat a powerhouse Wolves side 3-1, Melville will also be looking for a win after its 3-3 draw against North Coast Raiders last week.

The Old Guildfordians men take on Whitford, with both sides chasing their first win in the 2021 All Flags Premier League.

Westside Wolves and the YMCC women will battle for the points at Lemnos, both teams looking for redemption after losing their respective matches last weekend.

Aside from the dedicated ANZAC matches Sunday, other sides will take to the pitch Sunday, with Hale hosting Curtin in the men’s and women’s leagues.

The Hale women are still without key midfielder Liné Malan, after she suffered ligament damage in the ankle just prior to round one.

Alec Rasmussen, who was the All Flags Premier League Player of the Week for round four, will look to play a key part in the Hale men’s match against Curtin, after last week he scored two goals in the final ten minutes.

To round out the weekend, after both teams played out 3-3 draws last weekend in their respective matches, Lions and North Coast Raiders women will look to break out and achieve a first win for the 2021 All Flags Premier League season.

The WASPs and Vic Park ANZAC Day matches at PHS will be livestreamed on the Hockey WA Facebook and YouTube platforms.
