Hockey Australia Masters Championships take over Perth

Hockey is set to take over Perth this month as the women’s and men’s Hockey Australia Masters Championships combine for the first time in history. This blockbuster event commences tomorrow (Friday 22 September) and runs until Saturday 7 October.

Six locations across Perth will be home to the action of the very best hockey talent aged 34 plus all the way through to 80 plus. There will be 140 teams from across Australia competing in the 16-day event, with over 2,000 competitors, more than 170 officials and thousands of spectators.

Fans will be spoilt for choice with a line-up of former professional hockey players competing, including former Hockeyroos and Kookaburras.

The Women’s Masters Championships runs from 22-30 September, while the Men’s Masters Championships is split into two separate tournaments. The Men’s Over 34s, 40s, and 45s event will take place from 23 September – 1 October. The Men’s Over 50s through to Over 80s event begins on 28 September and concludes on 7 October.

The Hockey Australia Masters Championships serve as the selection for players to national representative teams at events such as the Masters World Cup and international tours.

Proudly supported by the Western Australian Government through Tourism Western Australia, together with additional support from the City of Joondalup, the Hockey Australia Masters Championship events are free for anyone to attend.

“Masters shows that hockey really is a sport for all ages. It provides the opportunity for people to stay fit and healthy throughout their life and come together with their family and friends to share a great sense of comradery and community.”

“Being our country’s home of hockey provides a great opportunity to showcase our State to the rest of the nation through this two-week championship event, while raising Perth’s profile as one of the sporting capitals of Australia.”

The combined Masters event will take place on seven pitches across six venues in Perth, including the Perth Hockey Stadium (Bentley), Melville Toyota Stadium (Kardinya), Troy Pickard Hockey Centre (Warwick), Lakelands Hockey & Sporting Facility (South Lake), Lemnos Field (Shenton Park) and Aquinas College (Salter Point).

The medal matches on the final day of the event (Saturday 7 October) coincide with the JDH Hockey One League opening round men’s and women’s double header between the Perth Thundersticks and Canberra Chill at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.
