Hockey heroes enter the WA Sport Hall of Champions

Inductee Jackie Pereira in action
The legendary Western Australian women's hockey team of 1985 to 1991 has been inducted into the WA Sport Hall of Champions, following a sustained period of excellence.
The Western Australian women maintained a golden run in the 1980s and 1990s, highlighted by seven consecutive national titles against other states including NSW and Queensland who had line-ups that could be considered very worthy challengers.
The Western Australian women's hockey team of 1985 to 1991 consisted of former and future Hockeyroos, with the likes of Olympic gold medalists such as Rechelle Hawkes, Jackie Pereira, Sally Carbon and many more at the forefront of the teams' success.
A total of 31 players are recognised for their contribution to one of Western Australian hockey's most dominant teams, coached by Hall of Champions member and Australian hockey legend Don Smart.
Speaking on Smart's ability as a coach, Sally Carbon said that he encouraged a bit of flair and character within the team, coaching the team to play in a 'cheeky' manner ( courtesy of The West Australian.)
Carbon stated that there were many other challengers such as NSW and Queensland who were worthy opponents, so it's a credit to the star-studded team to have continued success over the period.
On behalf of Hockey WA and all from the wider WA hockey community, congratulations to all on an incredible achievement and a well-deserved entry into the WA Sport Hall of Champions.
Hockey WA’s website, hockeywa.org.au, will feature profiles on the significant individuals behind the teams’ successes in coming weeks.
