Hockey WA announces Graham Reid as new Chief Executive Officer

Published Tue 25 Feb 2025

The Board of Hockey WA is pleased to announce the appointment of Graham Reid as its Chief Executive Officer.

Reid most recently held the role of General Manager Performance, Pathways and Asian Engagement at Hockey WA, with the move to the CEO role a natural fit in maintaining continuity in Hockey WA’s Strategy.

Reid brings a wealth of experience in hockey to the role, having been involved with the sport in Western Australia since 1984 as part of the inaugural AIS program, and eventual roles as the coach of the Kookaburras and at the Western Australian Institute of Sport. Reid continues to be heavily connected with neighbouring hockey nations, including the former role of the Indian National Men’s Team head coach, in addition to strengthening his relationships internationally during his current time at Hockey WA.

Hockey WA President Gary McGrath expressed his enthusiasm for securing Reid in the role, calling him a perfect fit for Hockey WA with the expertise to drive the organisation’s strategy forward.

“We are thrilled to have Graham Reid on board as the new CEO of Hockey WA,” said Hockey WA President Gary McGrath.

“His deep understanding of the WA hockey landscape and strong leadership qualities make him an ideal choice for Hockey WA.

“His appointment will also allow us to take strides on the next stages of the development of our competitions, in addition to growth in our participation numbers and excellence from our high-performance state teams.

“We believe he is the right person to build on our momentum and continue driving our strategic vision forward.”

Reid is excited to take on the role after a culmination of decades of experience and involvement in the sport.

“It is an absolute honour and privilege to be appointed as the CEO of Hockey WA,” Reid said.

“My journey with hockey in Western Australia spans over 40 years, beginning when I arrived in Perth as one of the inaugural members of the Australian Institute of Sport.

“As we look forward to the completion of the new Australian Hockey Centre, it is crucial that we position hockey in WA to fully leverage this world-class infrastructure.

“My involvement with hockey and business at all levels, both locally and internationally, has provided me with a wealth of experience and insights, and I am excited to bring this knowledge to the table and continue driving the growth and success of hockey in WA.”

Reid will take over from current CEO Fabian Ross, who is set to depart at the end of April.

Ross will depart Hockey WA after a successful four-year period for the sport, which has seen significant growth on and off the field.

He has been a key driver in Western Australia’s retainment of the national high-performance program, securing WA as the home of hockey for the foreseeable future, with the soon-to-be built world-class Australian Hockey Centre.

In addition to this, Western Australia continues to have the highest participation rate amongst all the states of Australia, solidifying WA as the top hockey state in the country.

“On behalf of the Hockey WA Board, I would like to thank Fabian for his outstanding leadership over the past four years,” Hockey WA President Gary McGrath said.

“Fabian has had an immense impact on hockey in Western Australia, driving exponential growth across all areas of the sport.

“Under his leadership, we have seen sustained participation, increased engagement with our members, and key partnerships and achievements that have positioned Hockey WA for long-term success.

“His passion, vision and dedication will leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Western Australia.”

Reid will commence in the CEO role on Thursday 1 May.
