Hockey WA’s ‘Bridging the Gap’ Course kicks off with successful Geraldton launch
Published Tue 11 Mar 2025
A new course designed to strengthen on-field relationships between coaches and umpires has officially launched with a successful workshop at Geraldton Hockey Association.
Proudly supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC), Hockey WA's newly developed Bridging the Gap course aims to enhance communication, collaboration, and mutual understanding between these key roles in the game.
The inaugural workshop brought together coaches and umpires to explore best practices, share experiences, and develop strategies for more effective interactions during matches.
In the workshop, participants engaged in a hands-on experience, covering key aspects of coach-umpire interactions such as:
- Understanding roles through presentations and open discussions,
- Communication strategies through role-playing activities and workshops to practice conflict resolution and effective on-field communication,
- Game rules and fair play via a panel discussion addressing common rule interpretations, and,
- Building relationships through team-building exercises.
Following its successful launch in Geraldton, the Bridging the Gap workshop will continue to roll out, with the next session scheduled for Thursday 13 March from 6pm at Bunbury Hockey Stadium.
This course is open to coaches, umpires and other sports officials and is a must-attend event for anyone looking to improve their game-day interactions.
