Hockey WA's Wheatbelt Festival of Hockey
Published Thu 20 May 2021
Hockey WA is heading to Northam for the 2021 Wheatbelt Festival of Hockey, thanks to the Country Sport Enrichment Scheme grant from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
The grant, which runs for two years, provides Hockey WA the ability to run community activations within regional areas and grow the sport, with Northam the host to the festival for this year.
The Wheatbelt Festival of Hockey entails a plethora of activations for residents of the area, ranging from education pieces, to umpiring development briefings and junior clinics for the next generation of hockey stars from the region.
A cultural experience will be held at Bilya Koort Boodja, including an Elder to perform a Welcome to Country, didgeridoo playing, storytelling, an activated fire pit, and kangaroo stew and damper.
An All Flags Premier League fixture will highlight the day’s proceedings, with a major match-up between Old Guildfordians Mundaring Hockey Club and WASPs Hockey Club giving locals the opportunity to feast on high-level hockey from one of the world’s strongest domestic competitions.
Hockey WA CEO Fabian Ross says it’s a fantastic opportunity to drive development of the sport in the Wheatbelt region.
“We’re thrilled to be able to head to Northam to deliver the Wheatbelt Festival of Hockey in 2021,” Ross says.
“The Wheatbelt Festival of Hockey will feature a number of activities including clinics and matches that exposes the residents of Northam and surroundings to high-level coaching, games and development opportunities which is fantastic for the region.
“The cultural experience including the smoking ceremony combined with a key All Flags Premier League fixture really ties the event together and we’re excited to deliver an exceptional celebration of hockey for all involved.”
The Wheatbelt of Festival Hockey arrives at Northam on Saturday 29 May, with the day shaping up to be a fun-filled day of hockey for all.
