"Improving" Thundersticks ready for 2022 campaign

Published Wed 21 Sep 2022

The Perth Thundersticks men’s and women’s squads have enjoyed challenging final hit-outs against Hockey Australia High Performance squads at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University ahead of the Sultana Bran Hockey One League season opener on October 1.

The men’s Thundersticks squad, in particular, showed significant improvement on Wednesday night, pushing the men’s Hockey Australia squad across much of the match, which finished in an 8-4 win to HA.

The third quarter, in particular, showed significant strides for the male Thundersticks, with a number of attractive attacking passages of play.

“We’re really happy with that showing – it showed lot of improvement and plenty of positive signs,” Thundersticks men’s coach David Guest said.

“We’re going to take that into next week and look forward to showing what we’re capable of on Saturday October 1 here at Perth Hockey Stadium.”

The women’s side also take from their match a number of positives, following defeat to Hockey Australia’s women’s High Performance side.

“We’re really happy to take some significant learnings from tonight’s game,” women’s Thundersticks coach Phil Hulbert said.

“It’s not going to be easy in the competition ahead and playing a squad like one of the quality we faced tonight will put us in good stead.

“It was also great to give some exposure to our Under-18s goalkeeper Summer Greenway who’ll remember this game for a long period of time.”
