Ladder leaders dominate in thrilling All Flags Premier League action

Published Sun 13 Jun 2021

A top-of-the-table clash between Melville and Victoria Park in the men’s All Flags Premier League saw Melville regain its winning form after its first loss of the season last round, edging out victorious in a 4-2 score line.

Ladder-leading Melville has only conceded one game this season, but again maintained its composure against an also-strong Victoria Park side, which was able to win its rescheduled round two match against WASPs Tuesday evening.

Ben Staines was able to score twice in the 10th and 39th minutes, support coming through his teammates Frank Reynolds and Justin McDougall, while the Panthers were able to score through Dylan Roe and Trent Scaini.

In the women’s competition, visiting side Victoria Park got the upper hand over Melville in a 6-1 domination.

Katy Clarke and Georgia Wilson both scored a double for Victoria Park, Jane Claxton and Tayah Medlen also scoring at the 12 and 21 minute marks respectively.

Melville’s lone score came through Renee Taylor after 47 minutes of play.

Round eleven for the men’s All Flags Premier League commenced on Friday evening when an eleventh-placed Whitford took on a then fourth-placed Reds.

Reds was able to find the back of the net three times through Brodee Foster, Aaron Kleinschmidt and Daniel Robertson in the 20th, 31st and 41st minutes respectively, securing a temporary second-place spot on the ladder heading into Sunday.

In the women’s All Flags Premier League, Suburban Lions advanced its position up the ladder after a 5-0 win over a winless YMCC.

Two goals from Georgina Dowd helped the side to its victory, along with singles from Amy Lawton, Kate Jenner and Meg Mccaffrey.

Hale’s women’s side was able to maintain its spot atop the ladder in a 4-2 triumph over WASP, now sitting comfortably ahead of second-placed Victoria Park with a six-point buffer.

Georgina Morgan had another standout performance, adding another two goals to her individual tally, pushing her total to nine goals, all scored via penalty corners.

The men’s match between the two sides resulted in a 1-1 draw, the stalemate being reached at full time after goals from Hale’s Geoff Cock and WASP’s Brandon Gibbs.

YMCC were able to defeat Fremantle Cockburn two goals to none, Michael Nicoli and Christopher Lim getting their names on the score sheet.

Westside Wolves claimed two wins in both their respective sides this round, with the men’s leading the way in a strong 3-1 win over Old Guildfordians; goals to Matthew Edgar, Simon Benetti and James Benetti overcoming an early 1-0 deficit to lead the Wolves to victory.

Wolves continue to sit towards the top end of the table in second place in the women’s competition, securing a 2-0 win over North Coast Raiders to see the side sitting under Hale on the standings.

It was battle of the universities this round when the men’s and women’s UWA and Curtin sides faced off in a double-header.

The men’s UWA side dominated their bottom of the table opponents in Curtin, with an 8-0 drubbing seeing the Curtin side still in search of their first win of the season; UWA’s Lachlan Busiko starred with a hattrick.

It was a different story in the women’s match, with the two sides finishing at a 1-1 deadlock.

Hockeyroo Greta Hayes opened the scoring early for Curtin in the seventh minute, but UWA’s Courtney Schonell levelled the score line in the 22nd minute, seeing the sides unable to capitalise on further chances to snatch the lead.
