Lions, Melville continue hot form as Premier League ladder-leaders

The Suburban Lions have made it 11 on the trot without a blemish to sit clear at the top of the women’s Premier League standings after a 1-0 win over Victoria Park on the weekend. 

It’s a vast improvement for the Lions, who finished last year’s season in sixth place, with a lone goal to Angela Chilwell in the 59th minute against Victoria Park ensuring her side continues their 11-win start to the season. 

Melville also sit in first place on the men's standings after a 9-0 thumping over Curtin University last round. 

 The win, Melville’s fourth in a row, saw James Day score three goals from penalty corners, while Kirby Hobbs also added two in the victory. 

Fremantle Cockburn clashed with Old Guildfordians Mundaring at Bateau Turf Lakelands in the men’s competition, with the contest producing a goal-fest that went in favour of the Magpies. 

Fremantle Cockburn secured a 7-4 win with Ehren Hazell and Matthew Nelson scoring two each, while Old Guildfordians Mundaring’s Chris Ciriello scored all four of his side’s goals from penalty corners. 

Victoria Park claimed their third win of the season in the men’s competition in a closely fought 1-0 win over YMCC, with Jason Gabriel scoring in the 31st minute. 

The men’s and women’s WASPs and Hale sides competed in a double-header at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University with both contests going Hale’s way. 

The women claimed a 4-1 win led by Line Malan’s two goals, while the men ran away as 5-2 winners with Liam Flynn scoring four goals to take his season tally to 36. 

Whitford hosted UWA at the Troy Pickard Hockey Centre in a men’s and women’s double-header with the visitors taking home a win in both matches. 

The women’s UWA side narrowly defeated Whitford 1-0 thanks to a Lexie Pickering goal in the 14th minute. 

The men’s match produced a thriller with Whitford fighting until the end with three crucial goals to Fraser Heigh, but three goals to Cam Geddes including a score in the 58th minute secured the 5-4 win for UWA. 

North Coast Raiders secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Curtin University in the women's competition.

Grace Stewart and Jordyn Holzberger scored two, and Robin Walsh a lone goal to lead the Raiders to their fifth win for the season.

Reds survived a late charge from Wolves in the men’s competition to go home as 3-2 winners in a hot contest. 

Brodee Foster scored two in the win for Reds, taking his season tally to 18.
