Local star headed home to guide next generation
Published Fri 17 Jun 2022
Western Australian Institute of Sport program member Alistair Murray will provide high-profile presence in the Wheatbelt next week in the delivery of free CSBP Festivals to schools throughout the region.
Murray, a former Australian Burras member and a representative at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina as well as the Eight Nations in Madrid, is hitting the road to help deliver Hockey WA’s Narrogin and Bruce Rock legs of the tour, proudly supported by CSBP Fertilisers.
The bronze medal winner from the 2019 Under-19 Australian Hockey Championships in Lismore will provide coaching and educational opportunities to aspiring junior talent throughout the regions, with games, activities and attractions for students in Year 4-6.
The 22-year-old, a member of Westside Wolves, is currently involved in the WAIS program which prepares athletes to graduate to the national team, and is thrilled to be involved in the CSBP Festivals and lend a hand to the next generation of hockey talent across the state.
“I’m originally from the Narrogin, Tincurrin and Wickepin region, that’s where I started – I absolutely understand the importance of these types of carnivals and getting involved with kids and fostering their interest in hockey,” Murray said.
“It’s going to be a great to be able to be involved in the CSBP Festivals and provide some guidance for the next generation of players, whether they just want to play locally or go all the way.
“It doesn’t matter where you start or how small a town you grow up in, it’s all about how hard you train and what you want to get out of it.
“I’m sure it will be an enjoyable few days and I can’t wait to be involved.”
Hockey WA CEO Fabian Ross said the festivals would provide wonderful opportunities for the next generation of hockey players around the state.
“The CSBP Festivals will provide wonderful opportunities for young children in particular to pick up a stick, play hockey and learn skills from some of our state’s best, including Alistair Murray,” Ross said.
“These carnivals provide absolutely invaluable opportunities for those in our regions, and these events will inspire the next generation of participation and engagement in our game.
“We’re very grateful for CSBP’s support and can’t wait to see the growth of the calendar of activities throughout our partnership.”
