Melville City Hockey Club have made history, securing the first ever All Flags Premier League Grand Final win in a nail-biting thriller against Reds at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

Once again, the man of the moment was James Day, finding the back of the net through a penalty corner rocket to sink Reds’ hopes of going back-to-back in 2021.

Day, known as ‘Daisy’ around the club, also claimed the Merv Adams Medal for Best & Fairest after a stunning defensive performance.

“It’s an honour to win the Merv Adams Medal and the Eric Pearce Top Goal Scorer award but the goals have all been about the work done by everyone in the team,” Day says.

“It’s a fantastic team, fantastic club and this is a momentous day in the club’s history.”

“To win the club’s first Premier League Division 1 title is huge and it’s reflective of the immense incredible support we’ve had from our fans; not only tonight but at all games and training too.”

Melville Captain shared his delight, stating that everyone at the club has played a part in the historic win.

“This was as much about the supporters on the hill as it was about us as a team, the support’s been brilliant,” Geers says.

“It’s a great day for the team but also a great day for the club’s history; it’s been a long time coming.”

The match itself was a thrilling contest, highlighted by the defensive efforts from both sides.

After meeting at a stalemate until the final quarter, it was Day in the 47th minute who provided the answers and the moment Melville had been waiting for.

After a dominant season by Melville on all fronts, their work was rewarded through an historic moment, for not only the club, but for the All Flags Premier League.
