Melville snatch top spot in thrilling clash

Published Sun 22 Aug 2021

The penultimate round of the All Flags Premier League kicked off with an upset, when Fremantle Cockburn denied WASPs a win, defeating the side 2-0 at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

The sides headed into halftime at a 0-0 deadlock, but Jack Welch and Harrison Keymer had the answers for Fremantle Cockburn, scoring in the 40th and 46th minutes respectively to lead the side to victory.

The Women’s WASPs side secured a 3-2 win over Melville in a close match, with Kathryn Slattery’s two goals helping her side to a tough win.

Victoria Park holds the top spot in the women’s competition, with a 2-0 victory over the Suburban Lions seeing them one point clear ahead of Wolves heading into the final round.

Second-placed Wolves continue their hot form in the women’s competition, with a 6-1 drubbing over fourth-placed Hale putting the side in good stead heading into finals.

Madi Ratcliffe scored a hat-trick for the side in a dominant victory where Hale’s only score came in the final minute of the match.

UWA dominated Old Guildfordians Mundaring in their match-up in the men’s competition, with a 10-0 victory giving the side a huge boost heading into the last round of the season.

UWA’s young guns stepped up in the match, with Jaxon Geddes scoring two goals and Harry Golding scoring a hat-trick, with all Golding’s goals falling in the last 10 minutes of the match.

The Westside Wolves men’s side narrowly defeated Hale in a 1-0 victory at Lemnos Field; Elliot Barton scored the only goal in the final minute of play.

In the match of the round, Melville City reclaimed their top position on the table, defeating Reds 2-1 in a thrilling contest at Aquinas Turf.

Reds held the top spot for only one round, after overtaking Melville last round, but Melville have regained their hot form after a poor four weeks from the side.

Whitford delivered a stunning dominant performance over Curtin University in the men’s competition, with an 8-1 drubbing seeing the side claim their first victory of the season.

Nathan Ephraums had a day out with one of the most dominant performances of the season, scoring six goals to lead the side to a huge win.

The women’s Curtin University side claimed the three points against YMCC, with a 2-0 win at Lemnos Field.

YMCC put in a strong performance in the men’s competition, with a 4-4 draw against a strong Victoria Park side seeing them sit in sixth place; Victoria Park now sits in fourth on the standings.

The North Coast Raiders managed to snatch points off of UWA in the women’s competition, securing a 2-2 draw after being down 2-0 at half time.
