NAIDOC Week 2021
Published Tue 06 Jul 2021
Hockey WA is proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week, a week held annually that celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with this year’s celebrations running from the 4 July until the 11 July.
The theme for 2021 is Heal Country! – a call to action to seek greater protections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands, waters, sacred sites and cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.
The entire 2020 Tokyo Olympics Australian team has the largest number of indigenous representatives in history, with 16 athletes representing Australia this year – hockey is no exception, with Hockeyroos Mariah Williams and Brooke Peris suiting up for Australia in Tokyo.
Hockey WA CEO Fabian Ross says the week provides an opportunity for the hockey community to reflect on its rich Indigenous history.
“It’s fantastic to celebrate NAIDOC Week and the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly in hockey, where there is a rich history of Indigenous Australians’ participation in the sport,” Ross says.
“I encourage the hockey community to do their part in celebrating the week - I know many of our clubs have plans to do so.”
“Unfortunately the COVID-19 lockdown in Perth inhibited Reds’ and Old Guildfordians’ opportunity to do so, but there are plans for these to go ahead at a later date, which we can’t wait to celebrate.”
