Nine teams remain ahead of blockbuster first round of Premier League finals
Published Tue 29 Aug 2023
The 2023 Premier League finals stage is set after a thrilling final round of home and away fixtures with red hot clashes in place for the first week of the business end of the season.
In the men’s competition, Melville sits in first place and will go through to the second round of finals with a bye in the first week.
Following Melville are Hale, UWA, YMCC and Reds, who have all booked their place in this year’s finals series.
In the women’s competition, Hale, UWA, Suburban Lions and Victoria Park will all compete for the trophy in what’s set to be a scintillating finals series with all teams performing at an elite level heading into the back end of the season.
Hale will clash with UWA in the first week of the men’s finals and the match is set to be a blockbuster encounter between the two sides based off their form in the home and away season.
The results between the two sides were split during the season, with UWA claiming a 4-3 win in their first clash, and Hale taking home a 5-3 win in their second encounter.
The loser of the clash will then face the winner of the elimination final between YMCC and Reds.
YMCC have an intriguing mix of youth and experience that has held them in good stead to finish fourth for the season.
The only blemish in their run home was in their final match, a 1-1 draw with UWA – before the draw, YMCC had claimed six wins on the trot in a string of hot form.
Reds ended the season with a mixed bag, losing 2-1 to WASPs in their final match, and losing 2-3 in their second-last match of the season against upcoming opponents YMCC, with the side sure to be out for revenge in their first final clash.
In the women’s competition, Hale finished in first place and will face off against UWA in the first women’s Premier League final.
In the regular season, Hale have claimed the bragging rights over UWA thus far, securing 2-0 and 3-2 wins, but UWA remain one of the in-form teams of the competition, finishing their season with five wins in a row.
The winner of the clash will book their place in this year’s Grand Final, with the loser facing off against the winner of the second final between Suburban Lions and Victoria Park.
Victoria Park booked their finals place in a thrilling clash to end the season against Westside Wolves.
Both sides were on equal points with the winner to make this year’s finals and Victoria Park claimed a 3-1 victory to book their spot with Wolves missing out.
Victoria Park faces a huge challenge in the Lions who spent the most amount of time at the top of the ladder out of any side in the competition.
