Old Guildfordians Mundaring match top of the table Wolves
Published Mon 04 Jul 2022
The Old Guildfordians Mundaring Hockey Club’s men’s Premier League side, currently second-last on the standings, has snatched points off the first-place Westside Wolves in a thrilling 3-3 draw at their home turf in Guildford.
The upset was Old Guildfordians’ fifth points-scoring effort out of 13 matches so far this year and disrupted Westside Wolves’ three-game winning streak, which has led Wolves to the top of the standings, replacing the 2021 premiers in Melville.
Former Kookaburra and Old Guildfordians Mundaring player-coach Chris Ciriello said it was pleasing to see his side challenge the ladder-leaders at their home turf.
“It was pleasing to see our side put in a four-quarter effort against arguably the best side in the competition this year, as well as the ability to hold on and bank the points as well,” Ciriello said.
“It was slightly disappointing we couldn’t go away with the three points – we led at every break and really challenged Wolves.
“The midfield battle was really strong, between players like Jake Harvie, Daniel Beale and Alistair Murray for Wolves against the likes of Johnathon Bretherton, Craig Marais, Liam Woodward and Pierce Paynter for us – it was an intense battle and bodes well for our club heading into the back end of the season.”
In another big clash that altered the men’s Premier league standings, UWA has defeated Melville 3-1, leading to Melville slipping from first to second after Westside Wolves banked a point in the draw against Old Guildfordians Mundaring.
UWA piled on three unanswered goals in the first five minutes of the match, with Cam Geddes scoring in the second minute and Harry Golding finding the back of the net twice in the fourth and fifth minutes.
Melville’s James Day scored late in the second quarter, but Melville were unable to find goal again for the remainder of the match, with the score remaining at 3-1 in UWA’s favour until the final siren.
Whitford claimed their second win of the season in scintillating fashion, handing Curtin a 5-1 drubbing at Perth Hockey Stadium.
Kookaburra Jeremy Hayward opened the scoring in the seventh minute, with Josh McRae adding to Whitford's tally in the 24th minute.
Curtin replied quickly after through Kookaburra Ky Willott, but Whitford proceeded to add on another three unanswered goals in the side's strongest perfomance of the season - watch the broadcast replay free on demand here.
The women's WASPs side produced a big result for the club, defeating the reigning premiers Victoria Park 1-0 in a close match.
Melissa Luff was WASPs' lone scorer for the match, with the win seeing WASPs up to fifth on the standings after a slower start to the season.
Hale has continued their hot form in the women's competition, claiming their seventh win in a row after a 2-1 victory over North Coast Raiders.
Raiders opened the scoring early in the second half through Zoey Clifford in the 35th minute but Hale piled on two goals late in the piece with Emily Chalker and Madonna Blyth scoring in the 49th and 50th minutes to claim the victory that sees them four points clear in first.
