Reds’ governance improvements a case study for clubs
Published Fri 26 Aug 2022
Reds have undertaken a comprehensive review of the club's Code of Conduct and Communications Policy to make their organisation not only more inclusive, but also demanding the highest standards of conduct by all their members.
The review was prompted by an earlier-season on-field incident that had far-reaching ramifications and was something the club recognised needed to be addressed.
Reds Hockey Club’s update and refreshment of vital governance documents are not only crucial for their club but present a lesson to other sporting clubs across the country.
Reds President Greer Schlueter says the upgrades and refreshment of the policies have not only helped address the prior matter but will ultimately make the sport – and everyone who interacts with the Reds club – an even more inclusive, accommodation and supportive environment.
“We’re asking our members to be mindful of all our stakeholders and the community in general – not just from a racial, gender or political correctness point of view,” Schlueter says.
“We want to bring to the forefront to be mindful of others, and how our actions are perceived.
“We’re renewing our Communications Policy, drafting, refreshing and renewing – making our policies and procedures appropriate for people, situations and scenarios.
“We’re also producing a behaviour guide for all members about what we are, and ultimately tying that documentation into our Code of Conduct and our Strategic Plan… setting a line in the sand about not only where we’re going but what our values are and what our expectations are too.
“I encourage clubs around the state to continue to review this type of documentation and make it as contemporary as possible, helping us all ensure our sport remains inclusive, and accommodating – truly the sport for everyone.”
Hockey WA has a robust suite of policies and procedures for Safe, Fair and Inclusive Hockey environments. All clubs and associations are encouraged to take the time over the off-season to review the available information. As a sport, we need to set a high benchmark to create an environment everyone wants to be a part of.
Hockey Cub Presidents interested in learning more about Governance improvements and best practice are provided regular guidance opportunities through Hockey WA with support from the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries.
