Published Sun 01 Nov 2020
The inaugural Ric Charlesworth Classic has ended in stunning fashion, with the women’s Outbacks and men’s Suns crowned the 2020 champions.
A host of Australia’s best up-and-coming stars competed in the tournament for the eight respective sides, with Roos Swann crowned women’s tournament MVP and James Collins crowned MVP of the men’s.
“It’s really nice to be able to win the MVP, I didn’t expect it at all, so I feel very honoured, but in the end it’s a team effort,” Swann said.
Collins said, “It’s a pretty good feeling knowing there’s a heap of talented players you’re going out an competing against, so credit to my team for playing well and giving me this opportunity."
A defensive masterclass in the women’s gold medal match saw both teams fighting for opportunities, with the powerhouse Outbacks sealing victory through a singular goal to Angela Chilwell
The gold medal men’s match provided a nail-biting thriller, with the lead bouncing from team to team, the Suns snatched the gold with a 3-2 win for the ages.
The bronze medal battle between the women’s Suns and Breakers, who both came into the match-up looking for consolation after not reaching the gold medal final, ended in a solid 3-1 victory to the Breakers.
The men’s bronze medal match between the Highlanders and the Breakers did not disappoint, as the Breakers from 2-0 down rampaged towards goal to snatch the placing out of the hands of the Highlanders with a stunning 3-2 win.
