Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 20 Wrap
Published Fri 18 Apr 2025
The first of the Stiles Electrical Premier League's midweek fixtures saw teams quickly turn around from their respective Round 2 matches in a bid to build form before the Easter long weekend.
Women's
WASPS have notched their first win of the 2025 season in what looked to be a tale of two matches, defeating North Coast Raiders 3-0 at Perth Hockey Stadium.
North Coast Raiders and WASPS faced off in the first round of midweek fixtures on Wednesday night before competition would pause for the Easter long weekend.
It was an even start to the match-up with both sides attacking strongly to charge towards goal.
However, defence for both teams were just as strong as neither side were able to break through to hit the scoreboard.
The deadlock continued through the second quarter and for much of the third quarter as both sides matched each other and mounted the defensive pressure.
However, a field goal via Hayley Tidy four minutes before three-quarter time saw the WASPS in front.
As the Raiders strived to respond quickly, the WASPS would score again via Jordan Edwards to lead 2-0 at three-quarter time.
The final quarter saw the Raiders continue on their quest to get themselves on the board but they found themselves overwhelmed by the WASPS, who began to take control of the match.
A late penalty corner saw Camryn Tidy score to extend the WASPS' lead to three goals, ultimately winning the match 3-0.
Elsewhere, Westside Wolves pipped YMCC 4-3 in a competitive Tuesday night match at Lemnos Field, Reds edged out Melville 3-2 on Wednesday at Aquinas College, Victoria Park defeated UWA 4-2 at Perth Hockey Stadium, and Suburban Lions produced a commanding 5-0 win over Whitford at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre.
Men's
A last-minute goal via Charlie McIntyre was the only thing that could separate WASPS from a determined North Coast Raiders side on Wednesday night.
North Coast Raiders and WASPS went head to head at Perth Hockey Stadium during the first round of midweek fixtures on Wednesday night.
While WASPS would make an early charge towards goal from the outset, the Raiders would be hot on their tail, mounting the defensive pressure.
Although the WASPS dominated possession during the opening quarter, they were unable to charge through the Raiders' defence, leaving the scores at 0-0 at quarter time.
The fast-paced contest continued into the second quarter with both sides continuing their back and forth, fighting for possession.
Although WASPS had a solid shot towards goal via Trent Mitton, the goal was ultimately disallowed, leaving the score deadlocked at 0-0 at half time.
The second half saw more of the same with neither side able to make a good shot towards goal amidst the high pressure contest.
Despite WASPS earning several penalty corner opportunities in the final quarter, nobody was able to break through to get on the scoreboard.
It wasn't until the dying moments of the match that a goal would be scored as Charlie McIntyre was in the right place at the right time to secure the win for the WASPS 1-0.
Elsewhere, UWA defeated Victoria Park 5-2 at Perth Hockey Stadium on Tuesday night, Mods-OGM pulled off their first win of the season by defeating Whitford 2-1 at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre on Wednesday, Melville narrowly defeated Reds 2-1 at Aquinas College, a Cooper Burns hat-trick helped YMCC defeat Westside Wolves 5-1 at Lemnos Field, and Fremantle Cockburn held off Hale 3-2 at Hale Hockey Club.
Premier Division 2 Men's
A hat-trick via Jaxon Geddes has helped UWA pip Victoria Park 5-4 in an intense contest at Perth Hockey Stadium on Tuesday night.
While the match-up was in a deadlock for the opening quarter, the floodgates would open after a 16th minute goal via Tristan Rourke.
As UWA looked to take the lead with a 22nd minute goal via Ben Baxter, Victoria Park would respond, sparking some back-and-forth on the scoreboard.
Although Victoria Park would be able to match UWA, goals via Geddes helped the visiting side maintain their one goal advantage to win.
On Thursday night, Whitford edged out Rockingham Redbacks 2-1, Curtin University pipped WASPs 2-1, a hat-trick via Hunter Banyard helped Melville secure a 6-5 win over Reds, Westside Wolves defeated YMCC 4-2, and Hale defeated Fremantle Cockburn 3-2.
