Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 3 wrap

The Stiles Electrical Premier League’s Anzac Round has come and gone, producing some big results in exciting contests around the grounds.


Women’s

A Stephanie Kershaw goal was all that could separate WASPS from Victoria Park in an exciting Anzac Day match-up.

Victoria Park hosted WASPS at Perth Hockey Stadium. on Friday during the Stiles Electrical Premier League’s Anzac Round.

The match saw plenty of back and forth between both sides, but neither were able to break through one another’s defences.

The high-pressure contest was stuck in a deadlock for the first three quarters of the match, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.

It wasn’t until the 48th minute that a goal would be scored, with Stephanie Kershaw scoring off a penalty corner to put WASPS in front.

Despite Victoria Park’s efforts to respond, WASPS held on to claim the win 1-0.

Elsewhere, a last-gasp goal via Madi Ratcliffe saw Westside Wolves held off a determined Suburban Lions outfit 3-2 in an action-packed match at Lemnos Field, Hale defeated YMCC 2-0 at Hale Hockey Club, UWA dominated Whitford 9-0 at UWA Superturf, and Melville held off North Coast Raiders 3-2 at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre.


Men’s

WASPS have celebrated their captain’s milestone match in style, recording a 5-2 victory over Victoria Park in an action-packed Anzac Day match-up.

Victoria Park took on WASPS at Perth Hockey Stadium on Friday during the Stiles Electrical Premier League’s Anzac Round.

The WASPS faithful turned out in droves to celebrate skipper Brandon Gibbs’ 250th match, and it did not take long for Gibbs to make an impact on the scoreboard, earning a goal off a penalty corner just three minutes into the match-up.

Although Victoria Park would respond with a penalty corner goal via Ky Willott, Gibbs would step up again in the 12th minute to score a second penalty corner goal and put the WASPS in front 2-1 at quarter time.

WASPS continued to extend their lead throughout the second quarter, with Trent Mitton and Chaz Davies scoring field goals to push the score out to 4-1 by half time.

As Victoria Park looked to fight back, the contest entered a brief stalemate until Davies would score his second goal for the match, slotting in a field goal late to lead 5-1 at the final change.

Victoria Park would show signs of life throughout the final quarter, stifling the WASPS and scoring a second goal via Willott.

However, WASPS held strong to claim the win by three goals.

Elsewhere, Fremantle Cockburn defeated Reds 4-2 at Aquinas College, Westside Wolves held off Mods-OGM 2-1 at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre, UWA put up a dominant effort against Whitford – earning their first clean-sheet win for the season by defeating Whitford 6-0 at UWA Superturf, Hale put an end to YMCC’s undefeated streak – winning 2-1 at Hale Hockey Club, and Melville defeated North Coast Raiders 6-0 at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre.


Premier Division 2

After a near two-week break from competition, the Premier Division 2 Women’s competition returned to action over the weekend with plenty of big results. A stunning fourth-quarter effort saw the Reds come from behind to defeat Fremantle Cockburn 4-3 in an exciting Anzac Day match at Aquinas College. UWA defeated Hale 4-2 at Hale Hockey Club, Suburban Lions and Westside Wolves could not be separated in a 1-1 draw at Lemnos Field, Curtin University earned themselves a clean-sheet victory – defeating Melville 3-0 at Perth Hockey Stadium, and Victoria Park dominated North Coast Raiders 7-1 at Perth Hockey Stadium.

In the Men’s competition, WASPS put up a dominant front – defeating Victoria Park 5-0 at Perth Hockey Stadium, Fremantle Cockburn held off Reds 2-1 in an exciting match at Aquinas College, Melville held off Curtin University 3-2 at Perth Hockey Stadium, Whitford defeated UWA 3-2 in an exciting match-up at UWA Superturf, Rockingham Redbacks and Westside Wolves drew level at one goal apiece at Lark Hill Hockey Club, and just one goal in the opening minute was enough to separate YMCC from Hale in their match at Hale Hockey Club.
