Sides continue red-hot form in fierce match-ups
Published Sun 09 May 2021
A double-header between the men’s and women’s UWA and WASPs sides kicked off this weekend’s round of All Flags Premier League action on Friday night at Perth Hockey Stadium.
The UWA men’s side continued their red-hot form for the season, making it five wins from six with a dominant 5-1 victory over WASPs.
The side now sits second on the table and proves to be a formidable force, sharing the load amongst the group with five individual goal scorers for the day.
The women’s match was a thrilling back-and-forth contest, with UWA taking the lead in the second minute of the match through a goal from Phillipa Morgan, with WASPs unable to reply until the second half when Hockeyroo Stephanie Kershaw found the back of the net in the 31st minute.
Both sides had their opportunities but were unable to capitalise, until a fantastic goal to Kathryn Slattery of WASPs in the 44th minute secured the win for the side who now sits third on the table.
Old Guildfordians Mundaring secured their first win of the season over Curtin University in the men’s in a closely fought contest.
The 3-2 win for OGMHC sees Curtin now sitting at the bottom of the table and looking for a win to clear Whitford, with the side’s goal-difference proving to be a challenge after their 12-0 drubbing from Melville City.
Vic Park regained their 2020 Grand Final winning form over YMCC in the women’s competition, securing a strong 3-2 win with a goal to 2020 Charlesworth Medalist Jane Claxton and two to Harriet Collins leading the side to victory.
YMCC remains winless and at the bottom of the table for the season thus far and looks to prove a point next week against Melville City to reclaim some form heading into the peak of the season.
Suburban Lions had their first win of the season in the women’s competition, holding Wolves to a goalless performance in a tough contest; goals to Sophie Taylor and Matilda Banfield in the 34th and 49th minutes respectively securing the win a giving the side the kick-start they needed.
Melville City have continued their dominant form in the men’s competition and sit as clear favourites at the top of the table after securing a clinical 4-2 win over a formidable Hale outfit.
James Day’s penalty corners continue to be a problem for sides this season, with the Canberra native scoring two cracking goals for the day, with goals to Tim Geers and Matt Willis helping the side secure their sixth win from six games.
In the Lizzie Watkins Memorial Match at Perth Hockey Stadium, Curtin University and North Coast Raiders put on a goal-fest for fans in a key fixture that commemorates the life of Raider’s Lizzie Watkins, who tragically passed away playing the game she loved.
Curtin University secured a 7-3 win over the Raiders, with the side now sitting at the top of the table in the women’s competition.
Hale and Melville City faced again in the women’s competition, but it was Hale this time that secured the win, with goals to Fiona Cock and Emily Chalker in the third and 35th minutes respectively leading the side to victory.
Wolves held off an attacking Fremantle Cockburn to snatch a 2-1 win over the side; goals early to Alex Rippey and Dane Gavranich in the sixth and 21st minutes respectively giving the side the early lead.
Wolves now sit in sixth position on the standings and are slowly rising towards the top end of the table.
It was a thrilling contest between the two powerhouse men's sides from Reds and Victoria Park, with the sides unable to break-away, leading to a 3-3 score-line.
It was a back-and-forth tussle between the two teams, with a goal to Reds' Daniel Robertson in the dying-minutes of the match snatching a point off of Vic Park which sees Reds retaining their third position on the table.
YMCC dominated Whitford in the men's competition, securing a 7-1 win with Marshall Roberts and Michael Nicoli securing two goals each; the win giving YMCC an added boost on their quest for finals this year.
