Spark Change: R U OK Round Hits Stiles Electrical Premier League!

Published Tue 13 Aug 2024

The importance of mental health and encouraging meaningful conversations within the community will be placed under the spotlight this weekend as the Stiles Electrical Premier League acknowledges R U OK Round.

R U OK Day, typically observed annually on the second Thursday of September, serves as a reminder of the power of a simple question: “Are you okay?”.

The day is designed to inspire people to check in with friends, family, colleagues, and teammates, fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

To support the initiative, Hockey WA and the Stiles Electrical Premier League is committed to promoting a culture of care and open dialogue, emphasising that everyone plays a role in supporting mental well-being.

R U OK?'s mission is to inspire and empower people to meaningfully connect with those in their world and lend support when they are struggling with life.

An estimated nine people take their lives every day in Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics, Causes of Death, Australia, 2021), and over 10 million Australian adults know someone who had died by suicide (Suicide Prevention Australia).

R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention efforts by encouraging people to invest more time in their personal relationships and building the capacity of informal support networks – friends, family and colleagues - to be alert to those around them, have a conversation if they identify signs of distress or difficulty and connect someone to appropriate support, long before they're in crisis.

“We are proud to dedicate this round to R U OK Day and shine a light on mental health,” Hockey WA chief executive officer Fabian Ross said.

“It’s crucial that we all take the time to connect with those around us and show that we care.

“By focusing on this important issue, we hope to encourage open conversations and build a more supportive community.”

Clubs are encouraged to participate in the conversation and show their support for mental health awareness during the round.

For more information and to help start the conversation around mental health, several resources and tips are available from the R U OK Day website.
