Standings take shape as Premier League sides fight for points

Reds Hockey Club continue their charge towards the top of the men’s Premier League standings after securing a 5-3 win over Whitford at the Warwick Hockey Centre.

Fresh off the back of a six-goal haul, Kookaburras’ Blake Govers claimed a hat-trick in the win and now leads the men’s goal-scoring tally on 19, with Hale’s Liam Flynn in second on 15.

In Reds’ women’s match against the second-place Westside Wolves, Reds managed to score points for the second time this season in a 1-1 draw at Lemnos Field.

Wolves’ Madi Ratcliffe opened the scoring early in the seventh minute, but Reds’ Rachel Barclay found goal in the 26th minute, with both sides stuck at a deadlock until the final siren.

The men’s Westside Wolves side sit equal-first on points after a 3-1 victory over Fremantle Cockburn, with Alistair Murray, Jake Harvie and James Benetti all scoring in the win.

Victoria Park have returned to their Grand Final-winning form in the women’s competition after a slower start to the 2022 season, with a win over Suburban Lions hoping to kick their season into gear.

Victoria Park showcased their attacking strength with four individual goal scorers for the match, with Harriet Collins, Chloe Buzza, Michelle Harvey and Maddie Fenwick all finding goal.

Victoria Park suffered a 5-2 defeat to Hale in the men’s match, with Hale’s Liam Flynn dominant in the match, scoring a hat-trick to take his season tally to 15.

Hale continue to dominate in the women’s competition, with a 4-1 victory over Curtin claiming the side another three points for the season – Hale’s Edwina Bone scored two in the victory.

Melville remain top of the men’s standings with a strong goal difference, with a 4-0 win over WASPs a much-needed result following the side’s 2-1 loss to Victoria Park in the previous round.

In the women’s match, Melville and WASPs finished their contest in a 1-1 draw, with WASPs Melissa Luff snatching the points of Melville through a goal in the dying minutes.

UWA continue to impress in the women’s competition after a 5-1 victory over a strong North Coast Raiders side.

After going into half-time 2-1 up, UWA managed to pile on three more goals through Britney Desilva, Jacqueline Morgan and Jessica Butterworth to secure a strong victory over a fellow top-end team.

The men’s UWA side were unable to score the three points against Old Guildfordians Mundaring with both sides finishing their match at a 2-2 deadlock.

Kookaburras’ Craig Marais scored two for Guildford in the performance, with his goal in the 56th minute snatching the points off UWA.

YMCC are back on the winners list after three consecutive defeats in the men’s competition, defeating Curtin 6-1.

YMCC’s Jacob Anderson and Joel Rintala both scored two in a strong victory for the side.
