Stars to shine at Hockey WA Indoor Classic
Published Tue 20 Sep 2022
Teams for the inaugural Hockey WA Indoor Hockey Classic will be announced on Wednesday 21 September, with coaches having a number of incredibly talented hockey players to pick from to fill their sides.
Nominations closed on September 12 for the tournament which will be held in Northam next month, with indoor and outdoor stars including Elizabeth Duguid, Anna Roberts and Matt Tate throwing their hat in the ring for selection.
The Classic is supported by the Shire of Northam and will run from October 8 to 9 and provide players and spectators the opportunity to experience elite-level indoor hockey and explore the region.
Hockey WA General Manager of Performance and Development Dean Evans said the two-day tournament would be similar to the Ric Charlesworth Classic.
“The style of the tournament is a bit like the Ric Charlesworth Classic with the four teams – The Breakers, The Outbacks, The Suns and The Highlanders,” Evans said.
Evans said a variety of national and state indoor and outdoor players had nominated for the Classic, which he hoped would put indoor hockey in the spotlight.
“Teams will be announced on Wednesday this week, and we are very pleased with the level of nominations,” Evans said.
“We have a variety of national indoor players, through to WA state players and WA state field hockey players.”
Teams will consist of 10 players and two reserves, with each side set to play three rounds which will culminate in a finals series.
Evans encouraged spectators from Northam, Perth and beyond to attend the event which is set to be an incredible showcase of indoor hockey.
“The thing about the nominations is we have got a really good mix of field and indoor players – some of the best in each,” he said.
“The funding from Sport Australia and the support from the Shire of Northam has been outstanding.
“To be able to host an event such as this in a world-class facility is a very important aspect in trying to showcase the sport of indoor hockey.”
