The final weekend of Gala Rounds in the Stiles Electrical Premier League brought thrilling matchups and standout performances! With the competition heating up, a few top contenders are already making their mark.
Women's
UWA have celebrated Britney Desilva's 100th game in style with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over YMCC in a competitive match.
The 2024 Stiles Electrical Premier League Grand Finalists went head to head with the newly promoted YMCC at UWA Superturf on Saturday 29 March during the second weekend of Gala Rounds.
The opening quarter saw a hot start with both sides eager to get on the scoreboard early.
Amid a competitive start, it would take 11 minutes until the first goal was scored, with Celeste Le Roux breaking through to put YMCC in front.
However, Shayni Nelson would respond late in the term with a successful penalty stroke conversion to level the scores by quarter tme.
The second quarter saw the contest go into a stalemate as both sides contineud to bring the heat.
It wasn't until the 30th minute that another goal would be scored, with Prada Herron slotting in a field goal late to put UWA in front 2-1 by half time.
The second half of the contest saw the tug of war contest continue.
As YMCC looked to prove themselves, UWA mounted the defensive pressure to maintain their narrow advantage.
The competitive contest saw neither side score for the remainder of the match, with UWA holding on to claim victory by a single goal.
Elsewhere, an Elly Buckley hat-trick helped Westside Wolves continue their strong form with a 6-1 win over Melville at Melville Toyota Stadium.
On Sunday, Hale held off WASPS 4-2 at Hale Hockey Club, Reds dominated North Coast Raiders 5-0 at Aquinas College, and a single goal by Meg McCaffrey helped Suburban Lions hold off Victoria Park 1-0 at Lemnos Field.
Men's
In just the second weekend of the Stiles Electrical Premier League, YMCC have already emerged as top contenders after upsetting reigning premiers UWA with a 6-4 win, celebrating Angus Adamson's 100th game in emphatic fashion.
UWA and YMCC faced off at UWA Superturf on Saturday 29 March during the second weekend of Gala Rounds for the Stiles Electrical Premier League.
The first quarter saw YMCC put the pedal to the medal, scoring two field goals via Toby Blee and Max Freedman to gain the early lead.
As UWA looked to make a response, Chris Ciriello stepped up to put the home side on the board with a successful penalty corner.
The contest would soon enter a stalemate with YMCC holding strong to lead 2-1 at half time.
The third quarter saw the match pick up intensity as UWA strived for a comeback, scoring field goals via Jacob Evans and Harry Golding in quick succession to take the lead 3-2 by three-quarter time.
Following the final break, YMCC returned to the field determined to take back the lead and began taking control of the contest with four goals in quick succession.
Max Freedman would score off a penalty corner in the 47th minute, quickly followed by a field goal via Cooper Burns to take the lead.
YMCC would continue to surprise UWA just minutes later with a field goal via Liam Hart, followed by a further field goal a minute later via Jacob Anderson.
Although UWA would score via Ciriello in the final minute, YMCC held on to claim victory 6-4.
Elsewhere, Ehren Hazell and Rhys Angwin combined to help Fremantle Cockburn dominate Whitford 4-1 at Lakelands Hockey & Sporting Facility, while a solitary goal via Aaron Kleinschmidt helped Westside Wolves defeat Melville 1-0 at Melville Toyota Stadium.
On Sunday, Victoria Park defeated Mods-OGM 5-2 at Guildford Grammar School, Hale and WASPS drew level at four goals apiece at Hale Hockey Club, and Reds dominated North Coast Raiders 4-0 at Aquinas College.
Premier League Division 2 Men's
The second weekend of Gala Rounds for the Premier League Division 2 Men's competition produced some interesting results across the board.
On Saturday, YMCC defeated UWA 4-1 at UWA Superturf, Victoria Park held off Rockingham Redbacks at Lark Hill Hockey Turf, Fremantle Cockburn defeated Whitford 4-1 in a dominant effort at Lakelands Hockey & Sporting Facility, and Westside Wolves edged out Melville 2-1 at Melville Toyota Stadium.
On Sunday, Hale defeated WASPS 3-1 at Hale Hockey Club, and Reds defeated Curtin University 5-1 at Aquinas College.
