As the Stiles Electrical Premier League approaches its midway point, round 12 brought plenty of exciting action around the grounds.
Men’s
Hale has celebrated their captain Liam Flynn’s 200th Premier League match in style with a 3-1 win over Fremantle Cockburn.
Hale and Fremantle Cockburn faced off for their round 12 contest at Hale Hockey Club on Sunday 16 June.
Although the reigning premiers tried to seize opportunities for an early score via penalty corners, Fremantle Cockburn’s defence ensured a stalemate for the opening quarter.
Multiple penalty corner shots came early for the visiting side during the second quarter, with Dylan Martin slotting in the first goal of the match in the 19th minute.
As Hale strived to catch up, Fremantle Cockburn held strong to lead 1-0 at half time.
The third quarter saw a motivated Hale take to the turf, with Sam McCulloch scoring a field goal during the 35th minute and going on to take the lead three minutes later with an Ian Grobbelaar penalty corner.
Hale’s determination continued into the final quarter, with milestone man Liam Flynn slotting in a penalty corner to extend the home side’s lead.
Although Fremantle Cockburn were determined not to give up easily, Hale held on to win 3-1.
Elsewhere, WASPS defeated Whitford 3-0, Victoria Park defeated Westside Wolves 3-1, Reds beat Reds 4-1, YMCC defeated North Coast Raiders, and Melville dominated Mods-OGM 11-0 with James Day, Ben Staines and Jake Staines all scoring multiple goals.
Earlier in the week, a hat-trick from Ehren Hazell helped Fremantle Cockburn on the way to a 4-1 victory over Westside Wolves in their Round 13 match.
Women’s
Suburban Lions have begun building a winning streak as the competition approaches its mid-season break, holding off Hale to win 3-2.
The reigning premiers, who pulled off wins over WASPS and Melville in recent weeks, took on Hale, who had recent wins over Victoria Park and WASPS, at the Hale Hockey Club on Sunday 16 June.
While the opening quarter saw an early stalemate, it wasn’t until the second quarter where the contest kicked into high intensity.
Suburban Lions would draw the first blood with a Matilda Banfield field goal in the 19th minute, only for Hale to immediately respond with a Fiona Cock penalty corner.
By half time the scores were tied at 1-1.
Looking to take the lead early, Suburban Lions capitalised off an early penalty corner shot with Agueda Moroni scoring in the 32nd minute.
While Hale looked to respond with penalty corners of their own, the Lions held strong to lead 2-1 at the final change.
Lions continued their hot streak in the final quarter, with Moroni scoring her second goal of the day in the 50th minute.
Although Hale would respond with a Michaela Spano field goal, it was ultimately not enough to tame the Lions, who went on to win 3-2.
Elsewhere, Victoria Park defeated Westside Wolves 3-2 in an exciting contest, UWA defeated Reds 3-0, the match-up between Melville and North Coast Raiders ended in a 1-1 draw, and WASPS and Whitford could not be separated in a 0-0 draw.
