From dominant wins to hot contests, round thirteen of the Stiles Electrical Premier League has brought plenty of excitement around the grounds.
Men’s
An intense contest at the Troy Pickard Hockey Centre has seen North Coast Raiders prevail over Mods-OGM by a single goal.
The Raiders and Mod-OGM faced off in a battle to stay out of the relegation zone on Sunday 23 June.
From the first push-out, North Coast Raiders were ready to bring the intensity charging through to goal with Nathan Oldfield scoring in just 30 seconds.
Not willing to give up easily, Mods-OGM fired back with a field goal of their own in the seventh minute, with Pierce Paynter scoring to bring the scores level by quarter time.
The match continued to pick up intensity during the second quarter with Mods-OGM taking the lead with a Liam Woodward penalty stroke.
However, North Coast Raiders would respond seconds later with a Jamie Rawlings penalty corner to bring the scores level once again.
The third quarter saw plenty of back and forth from both sides, although the Raiders would break through to take the lead once again with a second Jamie Rawlings penalty corner.
With Raiders looking to hold on to their narrow lead and Mods-OGM keen to fire back, the final quarter saw the contest reach a stalemate.
With the match at such a high intensity, the match had an action-packed conclusion.
Despite Mods-OGM having a few opportunities to bring the scores level via penalty corners, the Raiders held strong to win 3-2.
Elsewhere, Reds edged out Victoria Park 4-3, Hale defeated Whitford 5-3, UWA held off WASPS 4-2, and Melville narrowly beat YMCC 4-3.
Women’s
Despite a slow start in the opening quarter, Hale have strengthened their bid for a finish within the top five after defeating North Coast Raiders in an action-packed contest.
Hale and North Coast Raiders went head to head at the Troy Pickard Hockey Centre on Sunday 23 June.
Looking to make an early lead, North Coast Raiders made a hot start with a field goal via Aimee Kirsten in the match’s third minute, followed by a further field goal via Madeleine Newitt in the 11th minute.
Although Hale managed a response via Sarah Byrnes, Raiders held on to lead 2-1 at quarter time.
From the second quarter, Hale continued their charge towards goal in a bid to catch up with the Raiders.
Despite Raiders putting up a strong defence via Monique Formilan, Tyler Pedley would break through with a penalty corner to bring the scores level by half time.
The second half of the contest was dominated by Hale, with Shanae Haywood scoring two goals within minutes of each other early in the third quarter.
Although Raiders continued putting up a strong press, Hale would hold strong to lead by two goals at the final change.
The final quarter saw Hale continue to dominate the contest, with strong performances by Sarah Byrnes and Michaela Spano giving them the edge.
Further goals via Caitlin Mundy and Fiona Cock sealed the deal for Hale, going on to win 6-2.
Elsewhere, Victoria Park defeated Reds 2-1, Whitford prevailed over Melville 2-1 in a must-win clash, Suburban Lions and Westside Wolves could not be separated in a 2-2 draw, and UWA dominated WASPS 7-0.
Division 2
In the Men’s competition, Westside Wolves managed two wins within the same week – defeating Melville 3-0 then Fremantle Cockburn 1-0, Reds and Victoria Park drew at 3 goals apiece, Hale defeated Whitford 3-1, UWA and WASPS drew at 2-2, Curtin University defeated Mods-OGM 4-2, and YMCC held off Melville 3-2.
In the Women’s competition, Reds and Victoria Park drew at 1-1, Suburban Lions and Westside Wolves also drew a 1 goal apiece, Curtin University and Melville could not be separated with two goals apiece, Hale defeated North Coast Raiders 6-3, and YMCC defeated UWA 4-2.
