Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 19 wrap
Published Mon 05 Aug 2024
As the Stiles Electrical Premier League enters the run towards finals, Round 19 of competition brought a number of interesting results.
Men’s
Whitford have bounced back from a tough 4-0 loss to YMCC by narrowly defeating Mods-OGM by a goal.
With both sides fighting to stay out of the relegation zone, Whitford hosted Mods-OGM at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre during round 19 of the Stiles Electrical Premier League on Sunday.
Prior to the match, both sides stood together for a minute's silence to give an early acknowledgement to White Ribbon Day and pay respects to Georgia Lyall, over a year after her life was taken in a tragic incident in July 2023.
Following plenty of initial back and forth, Whitford would be the first to break through and score with Fraser Heigh scoring an impressive goal on the run to put the home side in front.
As Mods-OGM looked to respond, they found themselves struggling to get past a solid Whitford defence.
Whitford would go on to score another goal during the second quarter via Simon Naughtin, mounting the pressure on Mods-OGM to respond.
Although the visitors had opportunities to score via penalty corners, those opportunities went begging as Whitford held strong to lead 2-0 at half time.
The third quarter saw the contest reach a stalemate with neither sides letting up the defensive pressure.
The final term saw Mods-OGM dig deep to try and find a way to prevent being kept scoreless.
While their prayers were answered thanks to a 53rd minute goal via Luke Nillsen, their efforts were not enough to catch up to Whitford, who went on to win 2-1.
Elsewhere, North Coast Raiders pulled off what could be the biggest upset of the season by defeating Westside Wolves 2-1, Melville claimed another clean-sheet win by defeating WASPS 3-0, Hale held off Reds 4-3, Fremantle Cockburn defeated YMCC 4-1, and UWA & Victoria Park drew at two goals apiece.
Women’s
Suburban Lions are continuing to press their case for the Stiles Electrical Premier League finals after notching a 3-0 win over Whitford.
During Round 19 of the Stiles Electrical Premier League on Sunday, Whitford hosted the Lions at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre.
Although the game suffered a delayed start due to concerns over dry patches on the turf, there was an early stalemate between the two sides during the first quarter.
It wasn't until the second quarter where the heat would pick up with the Lions breaking through for a goal in the 19th minute via Alejandra Palacio.
As Whitford looked to respond, the Lions would extend their lead even further with a penalty corner shot by Georgina Dowd to put the visitors in front 2-0 by half time.
While the third term seemed to follow a similar pattern to the first quarter, the Lions would hold strong and extend their lead once again in the fourth quarter with a second goal for Georgina Dowd.
Despite Whitfords' best efforts, the Lions held strong to win 3-0.
Elsewhere, two goals via Annaliese Daley helped North Coast Raiders upset Westside Wolves 2-0, Reds pulled off an upset of their own with a 3-0 win over Hale, WASPS held off Melville 2-1, and a 29th minute goal via Beatriz Monger-Molowny gave Victoria Park the 1-0 edge over UWA.
