Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 20 Wrap

Published Mon 12 Aug 2024

The Stiles Electrical Premier League finals are just a few weeks away, and Round 20 of competition brought a number of solid performances on the turf.

Men’s

Whitford have begun building a late winning streak after holding off North Coast Raiders 4-2 at Hale Hockey Club.

As both Whitford and the Raiders look to finish their season on a high, they went head-to-head during Round 20 of the Stiles Electrical Premier League on Sunday.

The match was closely contested during the opening quarter with neither side letting up the pressure from the first push-back.

Following the initial stalemate, Fraser Heigh would break through with a penalty corner shot to put Whitford in front during the 25th minute.

Whitford continued their charge early in the third quarter, with Luke Milne quickly scoring a field goal, followed by a second goal via Heigh to extend their lead.

Not willing to give up easily, North Coast Raiders fought back late with a Scott Caporn penalty corner shot in the 45th minute opening their account to trail 1-3 at the final change.

As the Raiders looked to match Whitford, the visitors seemed to seal the deal early with Anand Gupte scoring off a penalty corner to further extend their lead.

Although the Raiders would fire back late with a goal via Nathan Oldfield, it wasn't enough to take down Whitford, who went on to take the 4-2 win.

Elsewhere, Fremantle Cockburn defeated Mods-OGM 3-0, WASPS pulled off a commanding 4-1 victory over YMCC, Hale held off Victoria Park 4-2, Reds edged out Westside Wolves 3-2, and Melville defeated UWA 4-2.

Women’s

A solitary goal via Alyssa Rewell was the only thing that could separate North Coast Raiders from Whitford in a tight Round 20 contest.

The Raiders hosted Whitford at Hale Hockey Club on Sunday as the run towards the Stiles Electrical Premier League finals continues.

There was little to separate the Raiders and Whtford during the opening quarter with plenty of back and forth but no goals scored.

It wasn't until the 17th minute that the Raiders would take the lead, thanks to a field goal from Alyssa Rewell.

Although Whitford tried to respond through penalty corners, Raiders held on to lead 1-0 at half time.

The contest reached a stalemate for the second half, with neither side letting up the pressure, stifling scoring opportunities for both teams.

In the end, Raiders' one goal made all the difference, holding off a determined Whitford outfit to win 1-0.

Elsewhere, Victoria Park continued their charge by defeating Hale 4-2, Suburban Lions held off WASPS 3-2, Westside Wolves and Reds could not be separated in a 4-4 draw, and a Lexie Pickering hat-trick helped UWA claim a decisive 5-0 win over Melville.

Earlier in the week, Whitford edged out Reds in a 2-1 win in their rescheduled Round 15 match-up.

Division 2

In the Men's competition, Whitford defeated Curtin University 3-0, four goals from Haseef Salim helped Fremantle Cockburn pull off a commanding 7-3 win over Mods-OGM, YMCC and WASPS could not be separated in a 3-3 draw, Victoria Park held off Hale 2-1, Westside Wolves edged out Reds 2-1, and Melville & UWA drew at a goal apiece.

In the Women's competition, Hale and Victoria Park could not be separated in a 3-3 draw, YMCC defeated Suburban Lions 5-1, four goals via Claire Shine helped Westside Wolves knock off Reds 6-2, Curtin University edged out North Coast Raiders 2-1, and Melville defeated UWA 3-1.
