Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 21 Wrap
Published Mon 19 Aug 2024
With just one more week until the Stiles Electrical Premier League finals, the competition's top sides are firming their credentials on the road towards the premiership.
Men’s
UWA have cemented a spot in the top five teams set to advance to the finals after holding off a determined Hale outfit by a single goal in wet conditions.
During Round 21 of the Stiles Electrical Premier League, UWA hosted the reigning premiers Hale at the UWA Superturf on Saturday 17 August.
Following a downpour prior to the match, there was plenty of fast ball movement from both sides during the opening quarter.
The slippery conditions made it difficult for teams to break through for a score until the dying moments of the term when Hayden Beltz scored off a penalty corner to put Hale up 1-0 at quarter time.
Although Hale would extend their lead early in the second term with an Ian Grobbelaar penalty corner, UWA would fight back with a field goal via Frank Main to keep the home side in the contest.
At half time, Hale held the advantage 2-1.
Following the main break, the contest picked up intensity.
In the midst of the high-octane action, Hale had an opportunity to extend their lead with a penalty corner.
But UWA stepped it up in defence to block that opportunity and went on to take the lead for themselves with two quick goals via Main and Isaac Dyer.
The contest reached a stalemate during the final quarter, with both sides desperate to claim the win as the rain poured down.
Despite a few close calls from Hale, UWA held on to win 3-2.
Elsewhere, Fremantle Cockburn dominated Victoria Park 5-1, Melville pulled off a commanding 6-0 win over North Coast Raiders, YMCC defeated Reds 4-1, four goals from Freddie Britt helped WASPS secure a massive 7-2 victory over Mods-OGM, and Whitford upset Westside Wolves 5-1.
Women’s
UWA have proven themselves as the top team heading into the Stiles Electrical Premier League after putting up a dominant effort against Hale in wet conditions.
The 2023 Grand Finalists hosted Hale at UWA Superturf during Round 21 of the Stiles Electrical Premier League on Saturday.
After the initial back-and-forth between both sides throughout the opening quarter, the home side would be the first to score with a field goal via Jessica Butterworth.
Although Hale looked to respond, UWA extended their lead with a field goal via Neasa Flynn and holding strong to lead 2-0 at the main break.
As Hale strived to stage a comeback, UWA established dominance with two quick goals via Courtney Schonell and Bellé Ramshaw to extend their lead even further.
Each time Hale tried to find a way to respond, UWA would be one step ahead, leaving Hale's defenders under siege.
As the rain poured down during the final quarter, UWA continued their dominance on the turf, bagging two more goals via Lexie Pickering and Prada Herron to secure the win 6-0.
Elsewhere, there were a number of clean-sheet victories with WASPS defeating North Coast Raiders 3-0, Reds beating Melville 2-0, and Westside Wolves defeating Whitford 3-0.
Suburban Lions also edged out Victoria Park 3-2 in a tight contest, coming from behind to claim the win.
In the Men's competition, Fremantle Cockburn held off Victoria Park 2-1, Reds put up a dominant 6-1 effort against YMCC, UWA defeated Hale 4-1, Curtin University edged out Melville 2-1, a seven-goal effort by Shaun Shackley helped WASPS dominate Mods-OGM 8-0, and Whitford and Westside Wolves could not be separated at 3-3.
In the Women's competition, UWA defeated Hale 5-3, Victoria Park edged out Suburban Lions 2-1, Curtin University and Westside Wolves drew at 0-0, and a strong 6-goal effort by Bente Baekers helped YMCC dominate North Coast Raiders 12-0.
