Published Mon 26 Aug 2024

The Stiles Electrical Premier League finals contenders are officially locked in following an action-packed conclusion to the home and away season.

Men’s

YMCC have booked in another finals berth after knocking off Mods-OGM to stop WASPS, Reds and Westside Wolves in their tracks.

With one spot remaining in the top five, it was all eyes on Guildford Grammar School on Saturday during the last round of the 2024 Stiles Electrical Premier League home and away season.

Going into the crucial match, YMCC needed to secure a win in order to advance to the finals but faced plenty of pressure with WASPS, Reds and Westside Wolves following closely behind on the ladder.

The match was in an early deadlock with neither side able to break through for a score during the opening quarter.

However, it did not take long for YMCC to open the floodgates with Max Freedman slotting in a field goal to put his team in front.

As Mods-OGM looked to respond, YMCC extended their lead off a penalty corner shot via Timothy Fleay to go into half time 2-0.

YMCC continued to take control of the match throughout the second half, with several penalty corner opportunities awarded in their favour.

Despite Mods-OGM's best efforts to stifle YMCC's scoring opportunities, the visitors would extend their lead even further with a successful penalty corner shot by Luke Blee to bring the score to 3-0 by the final change.

A field goal from Luke Blee during the 53rd minute sealed the deal for YMCC as they held strong to win 4-0 and secure the last spot in the finals.

Elsewhere, Westside Wolves and UWA could not be separated in a 1-1 draw, Victoria Park defeated Whitford 3-0, Fremantle Cockburn and Melville found themselves deadlocked at 1-1, a Brodee Foster hat-trick helped Reds secure a 7-0 win over North Coast Raiders and lock in the Eric Pearce top goal scorer award, and WASPS defeated reigning premiers Hale 4-3 but just fell short of advancing to the finals.

Women’s

A cameo appearance by Hockeyroo Jane Claxton has helped the Reds end their Stiles Electrical Premier League season on a high, defeating North Coast Raiders 5-1.

The North Coast Raiders and Reds went head to head during the final round of the regular season on Sunday 25 August at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre.

Although the match did not present finals implications, it served as an opportunity for either side to finish strongly.

After some initial back and forth, Reds were the first to score with a penalty corner shot by Madison Fitzpatrick during the 13th minute to hold the 1-0 advantage at quarter time.

North Coast Raiders would fire back during the second quarter with Anna Roberts scoring off a penalty stroke to even the scores by half time.

Just as it seemed the contest would reach a stalemate, Reds took the lead once again during the third quarter with a field goal via Asta Fisher putting them in front by a single goal by the final change.

Despite the Raiders' best efforts to catch up, the Reds would go on to dominate the final quarter, scoring three goals via Britt Wang, Claxton and Bella Connelly within minutes of each quarter to seal the 5-1 win.

Elsewhere, Victoria Park's Beatriz Monger-Molowny secured the Women's top goal scorer after scoring two goals during her team's 6-1 victory over Whitford, Westside Wolves and UWA were deadlocked at 1-1, Suburban Lions defeated Melville 4-0 to strengthen their finals credentials, and WASPS defeated Hale 3-1.
